Hi all can confirm engine does indeed lift out with auto box attached it came out with all parts as in pictures only the r/h engine mount has been replaced and should go back the same (you would think) i took the weight gear box on dolly removed the mount inched it forward and up it balanced after moving forward and lifted off the trolley. Must admit i was a bit worried this morning but the actual lift was quite straight forward will be stripping over next week or two as motor is seized i know in one picture cradle bolts are loose forgot i had to lift onto stand will post more pics soon keep the faith

Thanks mate starting to strip have attached some photos the pic with the plugs lying on the gearbox shows the transmission loom this does not connect to the engine loom. The engine loom could be replaced but are a couple of tricky attachments if you need any area close up let me know am in workshop

ur a legend and thks so much , have just taken a screen shot of that bloody bracket that is nearly impossible getting the bolts back in with the engine in situ , don’t know if you’ve also got some of these short uj sockets , we’re a life saver that’s for sure

good to see mate it came out safe and sound , amazed the amount of bits that are fitted , dread to think what some of the new engines are like

have u secured another engine yet or do u think this one will be ok, or won’t know until you’ve inspected it

Thanks mate now i have removed box, crank is seized at one end but rotates 5 deg at other so must be broken. I expect i will use the heads for the 09 i have and source a jag or motor for this one. have to finish mine next as its been a funny week i mentioned my 330000 mile silver discovery 3 someone has been hassling me to buy it so i ended up selling it for £300 more than i bought it for 3 years ago so going to get mine in now i have heads will post some pics. thanks for the tool pics will look into them keep the faith

plus 1 , indeed and know I wouldn’t know where to start after taking it all apart , how to take measurements , timing it all up would scare the life out of me

Hi mate Hi all i thought i would start a new thread on the re-build hope your well i put a picture of removed loom on your thread. seems like block can be saved crank never contacted block or mains caps not a mark. Block going to a local machine shop for all the measuring and honing looking for ideally a useable oem crank hoping to stay std will have it again checked and re-polished new shells, rings, oil pump and seals, gaskets etc also going to change one con rod. Have done a few top ends, oil pumps, turbos etc so looking forward to doing a bottom end have done a few but never a tdv6. re-building these engines can be expensive but you can halve the cost if you do it yourself and its not too wrecked if you want any pics of anything while apart keep the faith

apologises mate and many thks for the piccies , just thought with it being such a fantastic project it wouldn’t be as visible in the engine section as it is in the discovery section, , I feel really rude saying that now, hope it doesn’t come across like that

that’s awesome ur be able to resuse the block , funny enough thought about turbos etc and see u can buy cartridges for these turbos and wondered how it compares cost wise

know there’s a mod for the turbo ref the bolts/ nuts to aid removal if req with the body on, know it’s tight but also read a few threads where the complete turbo has been replaced

also heard if the crossover pipe isn’t secured it can fracture , looks like it happens to manuals more because when the clutches are changed they forget to re secure it so then later it cracks , so the gearbox has to come back out in order it can be changed

hope u also don’t mind me adding , that bracket for the air inlet pipe that I’ve been doing plse make sure it’s fitted before the engine goes back in as honestly mate it’s a complete :eek: otherwise

Thanks for advice will carry on original thread. Thats the beauty of having the motor and box out all those awkward nuts are easy to get at and yes i double check every thing because its such a pain to go back and correct something. Also have only had one tdv6 that has had all the crossover bolts in place, egr valves also usually have bolts missing will try to re-post crank pics on original thread many thanks
 
Hi all following on tdv6 engine removal body on thread have now stripped the motor was going to use the heads for another project but on strip down it appears the shells have not spun and the crank has not touched the block or caps, one con rod minor scuff will replace, no apparent cylinder damage now considering getting a oem std crank, checked and polished by a local machine shop cylinders honed and rebuild with new shells, oil pump, belts, cam chains, etc. what do you all think keep the faith TY

HI all added a few photos of a couple of new projects. 09 discovery 3 was as cheap as chips i hired a trailer and picked it up same day. suspected cam chain or belt will be starting this next week at same time as other engine build even though i dont have much space going to keep this for myself as is in great condition inside and out proper private glass full leather and

wife needs an auto (dodgy knee). Also found a jag 3.0 bought for 306dt motor, broken cam belt was going to going to use motor in a future project but car in such great condition may just put it back in. There are loads of projects out there for those of you that are thinking about it for under £1500 you can save crazy amounts of money by doing as much as you can yourself more keep the faith everyone TY
 
HI All just started stripping out pistons spent sometime removing the carbon ring at the top of the cylinders removed four so far all look in good condition no scoring or wear you can still see cross hatch pattern (hard to photo) Will be taking block to machine shop later for main bearing alignment which they will do for free,check possibly a re-face (£129) and if ok honing (£43) as well at this point i am planning on replacing rings, shells mains and big ends, oil pump, trigger wheel and sensor, belts and all the obvious seals and gaskets. Cylinder heads re-faced and new stem seals i usually strip down heads clean all the gunge out of the inlets and give the valves a one minute lap in with fine paste lifters and rockers all checked for wear, this is the plan at the moment keep the faith TY

Looking really good and great the block can be reused

am in awe mate as indeed I wouldn’t even attempt to rebuild a TDV6 due to its complexity , hold my hands up in being totally honest , ie not having the experience or knowledge of how to test for crankshaft end float measurements, along with all the other critical measurements apologises if I’ve got that terminology incorrect

Would like to think I could do a straight engine swap , but alas know with my back wouldn't stand a chance , which I don’t mind admitting is soul destroying having that hurdle in front of me so always very interesting when there’s a thread like ur goodself

as a side note I’m really hoping in the future I’ll be able to get a 4.4 V8 petrol D3

Hi mate i spoke to the manager at Ivor searle engineering today very fair prices they are going to check mains alignment first they have a four week waiting time so this will give me time to start on my other discovery (another engine re-build hopefully only top end) measurements mostly done by engineers but it is a case of being methodical as you were with your project, all data in workshop manual shame your not local i can always use help. Only problem is running out of space so planning a workshop/mancave extension (and a wood stove that can hold a coffee pot) so i can have a longer term project or just do two at a time plus space for my junk. Are you looking for running and driving 4.4 or a project? because i do come across a few now and again not all in Norfolk keep the faith TY

alas can’t do anything at the moment with regards to the 4.4 as I wish to move next year, think then I’ll be in a better position , many thks and will indeed give u a shout
