Yep no warning at all! It still tried to turn over and I could see the camshaft turning through the oil filler cap but it was moving up and down as I was cranking, so I stripped it down and had snapped cam caps and bent cam shafts so I replaced them carried out compression test and all good! I don't envy you having to drop the engine out but if you're looking for an s type then drop me a message as like I say this one in my garage is surplus to requirement now, it was my uncles who passed away and I got it off my dad to have in case I needed the engine.
 
Hi all no problem gstuart i think its just a question of continuity ( lots of patience needed ) my electrics are fairly basic to be honest so i take it real slow when dealing with plugs and keep my fingers crossed all landrover conduit is crunchy usually the smaller ones on top i bought some off evilbay, by the meter i think. Thanks Rnicholson not sure which way i am going with this motor (seized) but i have another bottom end looking for low mileage jag to run for a month or two to go in my 09. Hi Andy yes saw one on utube too in india removed a xf out front with gearbox check it out. Thank you all for your conversation quite busy over next two weeks in my new (part time?) job will try to pull motor at weekend. At this point i will start a new thread on the rebuild or write off. Also would anyone be interested in a thread what you can buy for £1500 there are lots of bargains out there for a winter or summer project (excuse to be in garage too) so many d3s get scrapped because of labour charges alone. Change that oil and keep the faith TY

funny enough I was a plumbing/ heating engineer for around 25 x years and at first simoly couldn’t get my head round wiring for heating controls etc , then one day it all fell into place

know I’ve got a massive amount to learn regarding the D3 , has mine around 5 x years and must admit amazing what u pick up and lean

ah yes Ref the TDV6 , IE, , ensuring the oil pump cover etc is the upgraded one ,etc

that’s it regarding the conduit in top of the engine m all of the very small ones seem to be very brittle , assume it’s just the heat

that’s sounds really interesting of getting various parts from here and there to make up a good engine , bet ur save a fortune as well

great to see ur making progress and really looking forward for when u get the engine out, have u got a place that’s nice and warm to work on it then plse , will be fascinating to see the inner workings etc and what u find

me, have done abit more to mine , spent hours belling out all the wires , suppose next step will be to test all the sensors that have the 5Vdc signal wire , put the link below so u can see my progress,

Hi wow my birthday was sun 23rd yes keep warm i got a borescope to plug into my laptop for birthday will post some pics when i can work it out just being held up by busy blacksmith at the moment. wiring can be a pain you seem like your well into it now so just keep going good luck and keep the faith TY

im so very sorry I didn’t see this thread sooner, belated happy birthday mate for Sunday

that’s sounds good and indeed will be nice seeing some piccies please

thks mate , was interesting to find a really bad air leak on the egr stubs where it joins the throttle body , made up a rig so can re test it, as took it all apart again and resealed it, hopefully after allowing it to cure for a few days will hold up

then I think the next step will be getting all the air intake and intercooler pipes back in so I can get it back on its wheel, then it will make life easier as I’ll drop the suspension onto its bump stops , the carry on with the wiring

at least finding that air leak I’m hoping will help regarding faults , will be interesting to see what the engine is like after as that air leak must have been there for ages

looking forward as u progress and will also update mine as I do more bits

indeed and to be honest I really didn’t give the throttle body a second thought after fitting all new seals, however wished to prove there were no leaks but the smoke machine certainly paid for itself when smoke poured out , found it easier building the test rig as I could control the increase of pressure along with a pressure gauge , at least that’s sorted out

many thks mate and that would be awesome please if your able to take any more pics when u remove the engine, mainly of the sides as there normally hidden when in situ , that would be really appreciated plse , will be fantastic reference pics

must admit have also ordered some more new flexible conduit that covers the sensors wiring, currently the original conduit just crumbles when ever I touch it, so removed a lot whilst waiting for the new conduit to arrive , I’ll then replace as much as I can to protect the wires from heat etc

look forward to ur progress mate and all goes well, miserable working in this cold that’s for sure , fingers crossed it starts to get warmer

can’t thk u enough and will also be interesting to see what u think of the thread I started , always very grateful for feedback as maybe I’ve missed something

also hoping the new small ratchet spanners I got will make life easier seeing some of the bolts are right sods to gain access to

sorry troubling u but if u have a spare moment and able to would u mind getting some pics of the fuel filter please thats next to the engine , hopefully urs is pre 2007 that has the 4 x connections

it’s so I can compare the picture with mine as I want to double check that all the pipes are correct , if u do some pics from the side and top that would be fantastic plse , hope u didn’t mind me asking

many thks and very grateful, thats the same as mine where u have to replace the entire filter and not the later spin off type, mines has the 4 x pipes going to it

Hi all just finished lifting cradle attaches to balance beam not entirely happy ran out of steel so could not pick up 3rd hole in l/h front, on r/h front will make something that runs down and attaches to the alt bracket, mk 3 on the horizon lifting out in next day or two keep the faith TY

that looks a fantastic idea, hopefully will make life alot easier for lifting it out

ur as bad as me with making sure things are just so, lol, however I don’t blame u with that much weight swinging around , certainly don’t want any agro that’s for sure

Thanks mate good one (cant stop tinkering) was a bit scary last time had a lighter version, its really to pull up on engine rather than chains pulling together and risking bending engine brackets or worse still cracking casting. With the gearbox i think it weighs about 260kg so used 5 x 50mm this time, cost all in £35 hopefully going to pull motor tomorrow, if i get up worked until 10pm tonight keep the faith Steve

ur so welcome and see ur point ref the engine crane jig, I wondered that regarding weight , blimey 1/4 ton, well worth the money that’s for sure to aid the safe removal of the engine

once saw ages ago an E type jag engine removal, the V12 , looked like the engine went on for ever, lol

plus that reminds me once saw in an American car a straight 8 , thought I was seeing things

Whole new debate but i think oil changes are critical to this motor i know there are issues oil pump and bottom end bearings/crank mainly. the more performance an engine the more fettling it needs my silver tdv6 in thumbnail has done 330,000 miles and is original motor as far as i can tell after doing minor repairs but has a full service history. So change your oil and keep the faith

indeed and must admit regarding oil changes even if I’ve only done 500 miles in a year I still replace all the oils and filters , would rather spend £200 than a new engine , have been using millers 5/30 , alas is around £60 for the 7 x litres and last time used a meyles fuel filter , do that every other year

look forward of ur finding and that’s very impressive getting an engine to that mileage

alas I’m still laid up with my back , is like being on a roundabout , do a little then have to rest for a few days and it all starts again, still up on the axle stand, think it’s been on there for around 6 x weeks, will try again this week to do a little more
