Hi all,
I have a 2003 td5 which is a truly great car and been pretty much faultless in the 2 years we've owned it. Recently though we have notice it seems to be using excessive amounts of fuel. I personally have noticed any marks or signs of a leak but the I don't drive it all that much the other half does. My question is are the any known issues to do with fuel g or with the fuel system that would result in either consuming the excessive diesel or dropping it from somewhere

Define excessive fuel consumption and how much has it varied and how have you gauged this?

Is it automatic or manual?

Are you at any kind of altitude?

It's a manual and not at any altitude. Gauge purely by how often we're visiting the petrol station lol. No we are only getting about 70 miles out of £30

Holy smokes, quick calcs says you're getting 13/14mpg :eek:

You sure it's still got a diesel engine in there not a new V8?

Something is wrong in there for sure, have you put any diagnostics on it to see as all the sensors are working properly?

No not yet, Its only just really been brought to my attention as the missus uses it day to day. Could be getting a little more but I think we've worked out to be getting around 20 mile to the gallon. I don't know what they are suppose to do but we've definitely seen an increase in fuel consumption over the past weeks and her travelling doesn't change week to week
 
I'd be tempted to get the diagnostics on it to see what the live readings are, maybe it's over fuelling from an intake temp sensor or something similar.
 
Check for high oil level on dipstick as matter of urgency.

Injector O rings can fail, dumping diesel into the engine. Engine can run on potentially, bad things happen.

Check oil level and sniff for diesel. It'll be thin as pìss as well.
 
For such a difference in mpg, is have thought most of it would be coming out of the exhaust as smoke if it was a fuelling problem?
 
How does it feel power wise? Are you having to use more throttle to achieve the same result?
If so, dodgy MAF or MAP sensor? Loss of boost between turbo and inlet manifold? Failing turbo?
 
I use an app called fuelly. Very good for tracking fuel use, the important bits of it are free to use.
To give you some idea, My 2004 TD5 D2 is currently averaging 22.2 MPG.
I'd notice straight away if my MPG went down due to this app.

I suffered this for ages, checked MAF, changed it, checked MAP, cleaned it, etc etc, by chance a garage checked with its diagnostics. Despite the MAF being reasonably new, it WAS the MAF. Since replaced mpg has gone down and performance has gone up. td5 auto, managed to get 28.5 mpg while on holiday in Scotland. (Brim to brim test.) So I'd suggest having a really good look at your MAF. You could even try disconnecting it, if it is bad the "get you home" limp mode will probably be more economical!
 
And not just good but genuine MAF! I have also changed MAF two times and finally only the genuine worked well. Better performance and fuel consuption
