...what type off hissing like an air leak hissing or is that the wurring i hear.

This is the only clip I have on my phone of it cranking. For some reason it won't upload the 9sec vid
Like an air leak hissing... if nothing like that the problem is with the fuel pressure... load the video to youtube or here https://streamable.com/ and post the link

Yeah that's the sound i describe as the wurring sound. It does that where it stops clicks and starts again.

Then it's not a fuel pressure issue, i'm affraid it's something serious or something hilariously simple but missed, a nanocom or similar is needed to diagnose it step by step based on live inputs and to swap the ECU with known good one eventually cos it can be an ECU fault too

Yeah I'm hoping for something stupidly simple but it's not going to be haha. Going to see if anyone has a hawkeye as the nanocom at the garage just won't pick up any faults on my disco.

Has anyone suggested a replacement ECU? Apparently, dampness can cause all sorts of problems. It’s where to start spending that presents an expensive problem.
+1 on the ECU swap.

@Sophia casper I have an ecu that refuses to play ball.
It was given to a very competent electrical engineer who looked at everything with a microscope and couldn't find a fault.
Secondhand one off Ebay went as soon as I got a garage to enable it to talk to the BCU. And to enter the numbers of the injectors.
I have been running with it ever since.
Bearing in mind what you have been spending money on , I'd go for this. The message being that an apparently good ECU can still have faults that are invisible.
And if this doesn't work, buy a box of matches.
Very best of luck

With my current luck the matches would not ignite!

Coming to this late so forgive me if I'm way off. If it starts with East Start then stops after a few seconds then to me that suggests a fuelling issue. If you know diesel getting to the FPR there are ways to check if it getting to injectors.
I am old school crack 'em off and turn over but I pretty sure you can't do that with TD5 due to pressure involved.
I would be inclined to seek out a local diesel specialist, perhaps someone who does taxi's ?
Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who has posted thoughts on non starting Defender Td5. Unfortunately, having tried the “official” procedure of purging after non fuel cutouts I am no closer to resolving the problem and hearing the engine run again.

Given the number of potential mechanical and electrical failures, has anyone any knowledge of a tried and proven strategic plan which will eliminate potential problems one by one which could lead to a solution to the problem?

Kind regards Alan

Thank you for your help. Do you think that it is imperative that I have a Nanocom code reader? Regards Alan
Nanocom or similar standard will be a best choice.
But, if it were me I would be spending my money on something like Foxwell or Autell. I know many will say you need a dedicated machine but it would be nice to use them on a variety of vehicles.

Thank you for your support. My mechanic is the one who is working on the car and I am not sure which system he uses, but I believe it is a good one. My initial question was answered by you in your last text, my thought process was a question of the beneficial cost of buying a Nanocom reader. I’m 75 years old in a couple of months time and I am not going to be able to drive for much longer.

I spoke to a LR Td5 specialist yesterday who convinced me that his experience would allow him to resolve the problem. Unfortunately, he’s over 100 km from me and it’s a long way to push a LR 90!

Yes 100Km is a long way but if you have no one local and it has you stumped then I would be considering it.
If this guy is recommended and you trust him a recovery may be money well spent ?

Yes I think that you are correct. I am going to leave it with my own mechanic to see if he can fix it, and in the interim I will look into the possibility of having it transported to him. I don’t know him personally but he has been in LR business for 20 years. When I spoke to him on the phone he went through a number of different possible scenarios which were all those that I have read about and one or two more.

I paid very little for the car in 2008 but it’s not going to be worth much as it stands, so it’s worth spending money to get it running again. Good to hear from you. Regards Alan
