Hello everyone,
Asking for a friend who isn't technical enough to be on forums etc.

His fuel pump starting wining last week, and when he parked up at work it cut out and unable to start.

However I can hear the fuel pump still wining and still purging. From under the bonnet you can hear fuel being swished around when the ignition is on. However it will not start.

My question is does a broken fuel pump still make sounds?

I have advised new filter and remove pump to give it a good clean.

Thank you

The pump can make sounds and work only on LP but usually the engine starts on that but runs without power. I doubt that cleaning the pump and replaceing the filter would help. The problem is something else but it's hard to guess just like that, some troubleshooting is needed to see if it gets crank signal, swap relays R9 with R8 and if it was cranked too much and the battery is weak the starter still turns well while the ECU doesnt get enough voltage to open the injectors... if it's manual try to bump start it or if it's auto start it on spray... here's a test for pump Check Td5 fuel pump HP

Thank you! I will let him know this information. And try and bump start it. We have removed the pump and the fuel is a cloudy mud colour with alot of crap at the bottom of the tank. So I'm not to sure what the hell he's been using to fuel his landy o_O.

I was going to swap my pump over just to see if that was the problem but I'm not sticking my pump in that!

a good time to clean the tank out whilst pump is out and a new filter

Absolutely, there is a thick film of gunk at the bottom and the fuel needs to be completely drained. I suspect there is more than diesel in the tank, resembles cloudy liquid mud. So a deep clean and fresh diesel is needed

it would be a good idea to fit a wjn500110 air bleed valve at the same time
i bought one of these from lidl perfect for emptying the tank

That's perfect thank you, saves sucking on diesel....and what ever else he's got in his tank, he was bit vague on what his "son" puts in their disco, my opinion would be veg oil mixture. Only thing I can do for them is drain and clean the tank refill with diesel, and fingers crossed she fires up after that I will have to leave it to them and the AA man.

anything but clean diesel is asking for trouble extremely high injection pressures with the td5

I agree I wouldn't want to risk my beloved TD5, that's my concern that's its done damage somewhere possibly. it iscranking but not firing up so I hope for them with fresh diesel and a clean they learn their lesson and it fires up.

Thank you, drained the tank and will help them out tomorrow he drove to work and it was sat ticking over for about 20 minutes then it cut out and didn't restart. Hopefully after draining and cleaning and refilling with diesel ....fingers crossed

I went through the purge protocol as he didn't understand bless him.

In my humble opinion I believe it is becuase of what he has been running it on. The pump is now making an awful noise and it purges then stops then purges again.

Bit of a update, drained and refilled with clean diesel. New filter.

Purged and also connected battery up to my wagon so make sure it had enough power.

Still no joy, I removed the pipe for the fuel cooler and diesel is running through with with ignition on. But still not starting unfortunately.

Then swap R9 with R10 and if you'll get 3 amigos you know that R9 was bad

Thank you, just attempted that still no joy, am I correct in thinking that because there is fuel coming out of the fuel cooler with the pipe disconnect and ignition on that that fuel pump is working?
