Hi all,

My TD5 (T reg 85K) has just gone into a garage (Land Rover specialist) because it stopped firing on one of the cylinders. The garage has said that the injector needs replacing. When the guy told me it was £500 quid for a new one I nearly fell off my chair.

Does anybody know if this is a common problem on the TD5; with potentially 2 grands worth of injectors to replace it does not appear financially viable to keep it.

Also in the past 3 months a whole load of other things have packed up and had to be replaced.

Both rear air shocks leaking; fuel regulator housing (material became permeable and started leaking diesel); Hose to the power steering pump split and finally the power hook up relay for the tow bar.

Is this normal or is my TD5 cursed!!

Hi most of your problems seam minor, compared to a lot i see the injectors are normally pretty good, only replaced 1 fuel regulator in nearly 4 years, air bags on suspension do go depends on what sort of life they have had, a relay is only pennies they can go at anytime, the injectors did have different color tops started with black went to blue and know are green, they have all crossed over to the green ones now as far as i know,i have got 1 brand new injector for sale green top all wrapped in box if you need 1 all the best tiga.

Hi Tigapiglet,
Unfortunately I had already agreed for the garage to carry out the work before I discovered Landyzone (no pun intended there) else I would have gladly paid £200 for your injector :-(
Incidentally for the relay I was referring to I was quoted £125 because it’s pre-attached to the wiring loom.
One last question if I may before I cough up my garage bill and put the injector issue to bed. Is it possible to test an injector once it has been removed from the engine?
I read a couple of articles referring to oil contamination of the injector-wiring loom causing similar problems. I mentioned this to the garage and indeed they found oil had penetrated the multiplug seals. They are replacing the loom but maintain the injector is still at fault.
Many thanks for all your advice so far.

If was you, I would ask ( no, tell, you`re paying their wages) to put the "faulty " injector back in after they have sorted the wiring out to test it, and if it works ok, they can keep their new one. I dont trust main dealers, the last RRC I had was 3 years old when I bought it and the last owner ( a company with more money than sense) paid over £10,000 in servicing and repairs the previous years to a Land Rover dealer in Solihull. Their itemised bills showed that the same " rusted in" radius arm bushes were replaced 4 times in 12 months, and charged extra because they were rusted in so much!!!
They also recovered the car after a dashboard fire, their bill included a new gearbox, as well as new dash and seats.
When I bought the car it had 13000 miles on it.
It was definately a Golden Egg to them.

hi chris you have me some what concerned, you should ask for a print out of the engine balance on the fuel injectors on tickover the injectors will fluctuate to balance 5 cylinders,if a fault is on an injector it will either show no fuel reading or really high and the rest of the injectors will copensate for a faulty injector,if they read minus then a figure this is good over plus side indicates a faulty over fueling injector, hard to give you hard data without seeing some if you know what i mean.in a few years i have only replaced 2 injectors for over fueling i have not had 1 die.
i would ask the garage to fit the new loom on injector rail and then carry out the lashing settings on the injectors and retest, this is standard procedure for landrover, they will not accept changing injectors until this procedure has been carried out first.
the injector loom is about £60.00 give or take a few pence, this is basically imersed in oil continuosly as the cam shaft is splash fed,oil is able to penetrate down the inner core of the wiring and runs to the ecm, normally does not do any damage to ecm and a new injector harness sorts out everything else.
i do not understand what relay fitted in harness,i am intrigued as i have no knowledge of this what so ever so i am a bit suspisous about this very difficult for testing injector, but if you dont trust garage ask for a print out know of the injector grades before and after then you will at least see that an injector has indeed been replaced,or tell them to stuff the injector and you will supply your own, i hope this helps email back for more help i dont like people getting stiffed,i work for a main dealer and i do give a rats otherwise i would not spend 3 hours a night trying to help people, our garage is not like itstuck, i do know dodgy garages exsist so best thing to do is report them,i hope this helps tiga

Thanks tigapiglet, I am going to ask for the before and after printouts and the old injector back when I pick the car up.
The relay I was referring to is what the garage called a power up relay for the secondary tow bar socket - used to provide power for caravan interior lights etc.
The relay, located behind the drivers side rear light cluster, developed a fault where it was constantly picking on and off.
In the end the garage disconnected it, I wasn't going to shell out £125 and I don't own a caravan.
Thanks for the advice so far.

Hi good luck with injector problem, the secondary electrics i dont believe to be genuine landrover then as there is no relay in the back off the car all relays are bolted 2 side of fuse box under bonnet but as you say dont need it so no worries, tiga.

I could cry :(

We're off to France tomorrow and we're supposed to be going in the Discovery.

I got in it tonight to get it ready. On starting, it ran like a tractor. Felt like it was missing a cyclinder. Phoned a mechanic friend (Diesel expert) and he has bet money it's a failed injector. Just googled and found this thread, sounds like just the problem I've got.

Not a great first post.

Fortunately, we've got another car to go in but I'm not looking forward to the bill :-(

Roger's of Bedford are not too far away and they've done the last couple of services for me. Do you reckon that would be my best bet for proper diagnosis and repair?

Make sure they hand you back YOUR Injector.

Hunt my first posts about the same sort of problems, sorted by a silly wee copper washer under an injector.

I did it myself even though the car was still in warranty.

That's what I think of LR Dealers.

Thieves all.

Surely the engine lamp would come on if it's over fueling? I've never heard of one shutting off, and as CharlesY says, copper cavitation is more favourable (and cheaper) option to check first.

I wouldn't trust a LR dealer as far as I could throw them....

THREE TIMES my TD5 Disco broke down - refused to start - due to gas or air in the fuel system.
I had the cam cover off the engine, and all the injectorsm out TWICE, till I worked out what was going on.

The engine light never once showed any sign of a fault.

CharlesY

With your fault Charles, no it wouldn't, but if the dealer is saying the injector has gone t!ts up, surely that would. The cylinder balance would be off the scale and the engine ecu should go apesh!t.

Rob

Cylinder balance? How come mine didn't know that the centre injector was not functioning for a week as trhe gas-leak developed?

My car never yet knew owt was wrong, be that running on 4 cylinders or not running at all!

Afraid I'm working from Volvo's system mate, our's does flag if the engine speed fluctuates from what the EECU say's it should be, or if it's compensating for low output on one or more cylinders. Using VCADS you can get a bar graph readout to show whats going on. We did however have one FM9 with copper cavitation on the sealing washers that was leaking air (combustion gasses) back into the fuel rail, causing it to be an arse to start, and die out after a few minutes, and this did not set a fault code (not until it die and continuous turning over set a code). The reason for this, so we were told, was the fuel pressure was reading correct at the filter housing, and at the primer pump. There is no sensor inside the head at the point of delivery, so it did'nt know there was a fault with air in the system here, and as far as the EECU was concerned, it was ready to go.
With this chaps fault, the dealer is saying there is a fault with the injector, and as they are both the same make and type as ours, I would presume that LR would have done a similar set up, and that the EMS lamp would be set to say that an injector had gone u/s. You injectors were OK so no lamp.
Pain in the arse I know, but like I said before, the computer dont tell you everything.....

Rob

Its always been a pain to me that TD5's dont monitor rail pressure like TD4 and TD6 do,so I have a quick connect pressure gauge to see whats going on.Did a defender TD5 on Thursday that had open circuit faults on injector 3 but was well off the scale on cylinder balance on number 5.The logged faults were instant but the customer wont want to pay for 2 injectors or 2 lots of labour either. To prove where the fault was I took the heatshield off the exhaust manifold and pointed a laser thermometer at the ports - number 5 was alot colder than the rest.So it was replaced and no faults came back,it also runs smoothly on 5cyls.No Mil lamp either, depends on the market territory as to what puts the light on.(Always thought it is a shame that coolant temp doesnt put it on either)

Update -

My specialist suggested it was probably the injector loom causing my missing cylinder. It wasn't :-(

Injector replaced on no.2 Cyclinder. (new loom also).
Total cost £417. Could have been worse I suppose.

Seems to be running smoothly again anyway!

Visited site for first time today to try and get some info on my Td5 1999 70k mls.
I've had nothing but problems since I got it; too many to list. Latest is a severe lack of power running rough on idle, I would guess 2 cyls down. I,m currently waiting for diagnostics tech to confirm.
I,ve owned 4 Td5's two from brand new. One new one was a complete dog only kept it for 11 month, next two were great no probs then this heap appeared.
I also run a 300 Tdi for farm work, 4 years trouble free and hashed every day, 140k on the clock brilliant machine, only compaint is lack of power for heavy towing

Hi there the relay that you are referring to is known as a split charging relay and costs £10.33 from Dingbro spares but I don’t think that is your problem as I had the same fault on my td5 last week and fault turned out to be the bracket that holds the secondary socket in place that is attached via the tow bar and was rotten away with rust so I replaced the bracket and problem solved for £4.00. Hope this helps you out
