long story but I've removed drivers wing and front panel etc as sent them to a friend to panel beat the creases and dents out!!.. with the front off I noticed my radiator core was sagging, but no leaks, so decided to fit new radiator and for good measure changed the water pump.... I then checked the pulleys on the ancillaries and found an idler with a worn bearing, so replaced it, i also spotted that the crankshaft damper had excessive play..... nearly fell over at the replacement cost:eek:.... anyway made a tool to hold the pulley/damper and undid the bolt... how tight!!!

also measured the crankshaft end float... which i believe has max allowable of 0.25mm,,, used DTI and mine measured 0.3mm so I will live with that for now as i plan to pull the engine over the winter and rebuild anyway.... 160k on it....

Anyway to the question... there's no way I can afford a genuine damper £400+, so its OEM of aftermarket.. I see britpart do one, but I'm not to keen on their stuff as not had much luck with it, although they offer one at around the £90... i've seen a few advertised on ebay with non descript brands £100 - £140.... and then there's bearmach £200...

can anyone offer any advise/experience on best options... I know its not the most exciting question, but replacement parts for landy's do seem a bit hit and miss.. and some of the genuine part costs are mental!!

many thanks

thank for advice.. just had a look at turners.... £250.. eek... but much cheaper than genuine. I contacted them to enquire on the brand... they said they are unbranded, but said they have sold many of these with no problems.

interesting... I'm not sure I would risk not having a crank harmonic damper... I'm obviously no expert but presumably there will be a critical engine/crank speed or band where the piston loadings on the crank synchronize with cranks natural frequency and will excite and you will get big vibrations... maybe the TD5 cranks natural frequency is very high, i.e. above normal engine rpm speeds... but then I guess if that was the case land rover would not fit one.... interesting to know if anyone has actually fitted a non damped pulley..... or if any of the bull garbage i just typed makes any sense... o_O
