JUST BOUGHT AN 03 TD5 AUTO ,FIND IT A LITTLE SLOW TO CHANGE UP INTO TOP GEAR (4th) ON THE AUTO BOX USUALY ABOUT 50-55mph.
IS THERE ANY MOD THAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP OR CAN YOU GET THE TD5 RE-MAPPED (IF SO WILL THIS HELP AND WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO GET IT DONE)

hi m8,take it in to the dealer and get them to reset the driver adaptations on the auto box ecu,its and adaptive system and learns the driver throttle responses,after they,ve done that it should be ok.
 
hi xjr,its as simple as that,if the previous owners were say farmers and spent alot of time of road,then the system adapts,it will stay in lower gears for longer periods,wich is in responce to the the throttle peddle demands.go to the dealer,or a indipendant with t4,and ask them to reset the driver adaptations in the g box ecu.it will be fine after that.its a clever system.
 
Mine changes up at just over 50 too.
I dont know if its true, but I heard somewhere else, that it is programmed that way and that all TD5's change at the same point. Seeing that we all have TD5's that change at the same speed, perhaps it is true?

Our ZF4HP22-24 Automatic Gearboxes have 4 forward gears and a torque-converter lock-up at around 50 to 55 mph on a light throttle, (without sport mode).

So are we discussing the change up speed to 4th gear (at around 40 to 45 mph) or the torque-converter lock-up (direct drive) road speed?

Personally I have always felt the TD5 engine revs far too much going up through the gears on a light throttle. If I ever have to replace the torque-converter, I would probably fit the V8 version as they keep the engine at a slightly lower speed than the TD5 ones.

V8 engine torque-converter stall speed = 2200 - 2400 rpm
TD5 engine torque-converter stall speed 2600 - 2800 rpm
 
Mine does the same, 50-55mph, and that is the best the td5 offers, got it checked too, and was reset. seems high revs, but thats how the adaptive system limits ALL driving styles.

if you want better economy and quicker lock-out, fit a SAIL
 
Hi guys, been driving td5 for 2 years now, it was purring away nicely, now all of a sudden the gear change is very sluggish! banging away at 40 50 60 mph @ 3000rpm on the motorway aint no fun. Have checked the gearbox oil twice, its been fine. Nothing to do with sport mode selected either, had all discs & brakes changed, no difference. Had a strange rumbling noise too, which was cured by slight adjustment to handbrake. 17 mm socket to fully tighten the hub then 3 half turns back cured the rumbling noise, but still erratic gear change!!! Dont know too much about auto boxes, but im thinking, oil seems fine in auto box, rev engine in neutral it revs really good, no brake issues, so maybe some sort of gear change speed sensor??? any feedback would be appreciated, the price of diesel these days is a nightmare, so when your banging along at 3000rpm as i says it aint no fun. cheers guys

When was the trans filter and fluid changed?
 
I managed to get the filter and oil changed in the box at a local garage, still no joy, took the beast to another garage, they told me the gearbox was shot, so promptly put it off the road. The price scared the **** out of me! Decided to check it out myself, emptied 1L of oil into the box, did the sequence on the stick then topped up with another 1L of oil, redone the sequence on the stick, I thought the first garage did that?? obviously not! The beast drove away no problem, up through the gears no problem. Hell i'm chuffed to bits, saved myself a couple of grand. Think the mechanic probably knew this and was going to rip me off.

Hi mate I wonder if you are confusing selecting 4th gear with the 'box selecting Torque Converter(TC) lock-up. Allow me to explain:


1. This autobox has 4 forward speeds plus TC. The gear being selected at speeds dependant on throttle demand. For example with light throttle 4th gear will be selected at approx 35mph.

However at approx 55mph on a light to medium throttle, the TC will lock-up (as it should) causing the revs to drop - so it feels like it's selecting another gear.

In other words, on the info provided, your car gearbox is working as it should.

2. Re-mapping an autobox TD5 makes a big difference in driving pleasure. I would recommend Mike at Dynachip Tuning it will cost £250 and he comes to you so it's dead easy and quality work.

I did that once on a forum, I'd been reading older threads and got right into the topic, and eventually had to put in my comments ... only to be told that the thread was about a zillion years old :doh:

Yes, I realise that - now!

I invested minutes of my life trying to help someone, only to find they now own a Land Cruiser/Hilux/Rave4/Shogun or whatever.

I's being retired you see - too much time on my hands:eek::eek::eek:

Being a student I too have that problem :D


But surely you should be out playing golf with all the other retired folks then ;) or shouting profanities at tourists :rolleyes:
