Went over to see a mate last night, got back in td5,started fine-go to select drive,nothing-tried all other gears, nothing.Checked hi/lo was ok and tried to get gear in low also-nothing.
Borrowed my mates car to get me home and went back this morning with tools and atf.
Started her up in park, and undid filler plug to check level, oil immediately came firing out of the filler, reddish but also dark.Turned off and drained fluid from box drain plug-got at least 5 or 6 litres in all.
Refilled with fresh atf ,but could only get 3.5 lts in-even running in park would not take anymore.
Help please is there anything I can do?Can I flush it with anything?Got a new filter coming or does this need to go away for a rebuild?

first thoughts.

brakes stuck on
cable broken from gear change, (will it start if in drive)
transfer box linkage broken and its in neutral
transfer box broken
gearbox broken

Thanks for the reply, but brakes ok-cable is good (dash display shows gears as should)only starts in neutral and park.
Think I am stuck with autobox failure.
Will try new atf again when autobox filter arrives ,but then I guess it is new auto box time.
Think the big clue is when all the atf came out under pressure when I undid the filler plug whilst the engine was running in park(was going to check the level)-just hoping the filter is completely blocked not letting the atf get to where it should go

Did you cycle through all gear lever positions, then back to Park - before opening the level/fill plug?

Yes I did,-seems to be a blockage on letting the atf in.
After refilling,it would only take 3-3.5 lts static-then start engine-cycle through gears(non of which are engaging),put in in park remove filler plug and it will not take anymore, just runs out if you attempt more.-Seems as if filter might be plugged if that is how the atf enters the system, also might explain how it threw it out in park with engine running.
I did check the level last week, with engine running in park, and just a dribble came out which was red(but not as red and clear as new),assumed it was ok and left changing fluid for another time-think this was my downfall.
Hoping the new filter with more fresh atf might bring some drive back so at least I can get it to an autobox place or similar or maybe repeated flushes with new atf and further filter changes might bring her back to life.It has not been driven hard in my short time of ownership, but don't know its previous life.If it comes to another box,I will probably try a biodiesel flush as a last resort(very powerful solvent),but will have to be sure to get it all out as it it very aggressive on rubber seals -any pointers very much appreciated

you will not get all the ATF out when you drain the g/box.about half stays in the torque converter.

Is it definitely in high ratio?

Our TD5 auto has occasionally popped out of high ratio and into neutral, resulting in lack of drive.

Well I've had the filter out tonight and it is not blocked,it is not really a filter, just a fine mesh screen,it would take some doing to block one of those(about 6" square),anyway problem is obviously deeper inside the box.So have bit the bullet and bought another box with 90 day warranty and just psyching myself up for fitting it this week end(thought I had finished with removing and fitting disco transmissions-they are after all a tad heavy). The box I remove I might dismantle and repair as as spare or if I am ****ed off enough,I make take a sledge hammer to it for therapy.
