I've owned an X reg Td5 90 for about a month now. When I put fuel in it and drive home it becomes very difficult to start an hour or so later. Once it does, it starts first time, every time until I have to refuel again. Because I'm thick as mince, it's taken me some time to realise there's a connection and I've replaced the battery and glow plugs (as suggested by the RAC man who started it with a long spray of 'easy start'). So, is the refuelling thing simply a coincidence or could there actually be a connection? Amongst the paperwork for the car, there's a garage bill for replacing the fuel pressure sensor........

Gents, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Have not got the answer - but all i know is that mine can be a bitch to start when wet or cold. I have to glow plug a for a while and it will fire straight away!

Get it plugged into a diagnostics machine, could be your ecu playing up / crapped up.

just a few thoughts from another post i read a while ago.....

could it be that when you fill up the sediment in your tank is stirred up + partially blocks your pumps filter?

i know dieso grows if left for a time + the scum can block the small mesh on the pumps intakes. it can also be quite ****ty -some1 even said they've pulled out leaves from their tank lol?!

or.....
TD5 is notorious for FUEL pump issues.

i changed mine 2 month ago as sender went -now starts 1st time every time, cured loss of power + surging problem (which i thought was oil in the injector loom) and now i have a working fuel guage!

good luck!

the td5 doesnt have a lift pump

when you say its after re-fueling do you let it run right down into the red? because if so this could be the problem some cars struggle to start if your constantly letting the fuel run right down, plus you dragging all kinds of s**t up from the bottom of the fuel tank aswell

Think that's splitting hairs! It has a pump that supplies the engine with fuel! Different people call it different things. As do manufacturers! So a flat it hasn't got one can confuse! And I like exclamation marks!!!!

it supplies fuel in a totally different way to a landy engine fitted with lift pumps, and using the wrong terminology can confuse people

It does supply it in a different way. But it still does the same job of getting fuel to the engine so that it can be pressurised and injected. I'm used to them being called in tank lift pumps. But what I was getting at originally was when lift pump was mentioned surely it'd be least confusing to say there's an electric pump in the tank. But me and you arguing isn't fixing his car:) I know you know your stuff from other posts so I'm not going to start telling you that you don't!!!!! More exclamation marks;)
I'm ex Mercedes mainly so will undoubtedly use different terminology to a land rover tech. But I don't think that makes either wrong as long as the person reading it understands and can make use of it. Most of them aren't mechanics so simplifying often helps them understand! Well that's my theory at least!!!! :D

Worth turning on the key and listen for the sound of the pump running and wait for it to stop before you try to start it, that should make sure that you have fuel pressure, if not or you hear any odd sounds then you can go from there depending on what you find.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I haven't let the fuel drop below around a quarter full and there are no unusual noises when I turn the key. I think I'll take it to a local garage (he has a good reputation and is a Land Rover enthusiast to boot)........perhaps I can get him to tell me why the temp gauge drops when I dip the clutch too! I'm just keen to get everything sorted before the Scottish winter sets in, which should be in a day or two!
