Hi guys, I've got a 2004 td4 sport with 140k miles.
Recently I went through, a rather large puddle and had a pretty wet day in general as I use the freelander for working in forest terrain and the ruts in the tracks can become water logged. All was well but later that day on my way home I lost power and went into limp mode with a lot of white smoke from the exsuast.
I dried the maf and disconnected the battery, disconnected the maf but it still wouldn't go above 1800rpm so I got towed home.
Water had got sucked in and the air filter was soaking wet.
I've got a new air filter on the way and all the hoses, maf sensor and air filter housing are drying out atm but I'm worried about the turbo, would water have gotten in? Is there anything else I should do? Would water be causing a problem elsewhere?

Thanks chaps.

sounds grim ............... :)
if water got in as far as the turbo then the chances are that it did the real damage inside the cylinders with some degree of hydrolock !!!

Does it make strange noises now ?
Does the engine turn over ok ??

How deep were the puddles, i took mine swimming it was about half a metre deep according to measure at the side of the ford ,took it steady and the only thing that i had any trouble with after, was the fuel burning heater ,and i think that is the sensor as i have stripped the electrics on the heater and all is dry ,hope all turns out well for you .

Look at the turbo breather filter at the back of a engine to see if it's hanging down and full of water. And listen to see if you can hear the lift fuel pump under the offside rear wheel arch.

Right, the turbo breather was full of condensation so replaced that but it wasn't hanging down. And I can hear the fuel pump working at the back with ignition on.
I think it's just a case now of waiting for the air filter and seeing what happens when it's running unless anyone else has suggestions of where I should be looking.
Thanks for the help guys.

Small update, the drivers side inspection panal in the wheel arch, above the wheel was missing, could this have been where water was being thrown up?
Ta again.

Quite likely. The engine air intake is at the back of the inner wing, near the side indicator. If the inspection cover at the front is missing, water is thrown into the wing cavity and drawn into the engine intake, wetting the air filter.

Well I'll need a new one, don't know how long it's being missing but putting my hand up there its full of mud so I'll get the panels off and give it a clean.

Don't know yet, waiting on air filter (also fot the new crank case filter on way as thats due to be done) before I put it all back together.

No postman yet so can't get the engine sorted but took the bumper and side wing off, under the wing and around the front headlight area was completly, like enough to pot several plants, caked in wet mud as well as inside the intake hole. All cleaned out now and a inspection panel cover ordered.

I did quite a lot of reversing down wet muddy tracks so you can see how the wheel has just splashed it all up :-/

Right then, maf cleaned, pipes cleaned, all filters replaced, replacement covers installed and bolted on. Also put in some silicone hoses and put in a blanked egr.

Start the car. Runs fine. Rev it a bit, gets past 1800 - great, now time for a test run.

Put it into reverse and take of the handbreak, but it feels funny. Car won't budge.
The handbreak is literally stuck on. Gonna have a look but any ideas?

If it got that wet and has been standing for a few days then hand brake is probably rusted on.
I'd give it some gentle beans rocking forwards and backwards, or a firm tap on the rear drums with a rubber mallet.

My handbrake sticks a bit in this weather - If your shoes have got a bit damp they might be frozen to the drums

Cheers guys, I've tried rocking it and trying to just drive with it on but it won't budge.
I've taken the centre console off and the left hand side wire won't 'go back in' when the lever is depressed.

Leave it in gear so it wont roll over you.
Slide under the rear and clout the backplates with a hammer. Hard.

I've smashed the living hell out of it, and been rocking it back and forth so much the non spinning wheel has dug a massive rut aha. Time to get the wheel and drum off methinks.
