Sadly just been shattered by my second TD4 Freelander with a broken crankshaft. Both Landrover and BMW deny having this problem. Am I alone or has anyone heard of this and what may have caused this? The first broke in the front between no 1 rod journal and timing chain, the second in the middle of the no 4 journal.(an auto as well) Both less than 140,000kms and in great condition.Help!!!

Two different vehicles? Never heard of this fault so wondering if you are very unlucky or are doing summat wrong?

The crank is broken cleanly in half.A metalurgist has checked the first crank and feels that it is a casting fault. I will post pics. The first has been replaced and the second has not yet been removed from the block.

this has happened to someone else on here, can't rember who though.

think it's one of the "not common, but not unheard of" faults

I do not understand how this could happen unless it was accident damage.and neither of the vehicles have been thus damaged.

My TD4 auto 2001 with 115K miles has just snapped its crank on no4 big end! and i drive it like an old woman,, never above 65mph.....

we had a mod on the 75 and zt forum dragrad, his 75 cdt m47/td4 lump done this,it was speculated either there was a weakness in the metal or the bolts holding it were not tight enough, never had any issues with mine in the 75 though, and thats now pushing out 180 bhp
