Unfortunately, the badge trick wont do it. I think with all my fiddling I switched the child lock on and now it wont open inside or out. I think the door lining will have to come off which will hopefully give me a clearer view of whats happening. Once open I can turn the child locks off.

Had to take the tailgate door card off, which involved removing the rear sub and speakers, the rear hand rail and the rear handle surround. Then inevitably half the little retaining clips break as you pull the card off. Anyway, got the door open from the inside and sure enough the child lock was on. However it is still not possible to open from outside. I looked inside and it looks like there should be a spring on the lever which holds the lock button up. As soon as you operate the handle the button drops down making opening the door impossible. Having looked inside the door extensively, I cant see the remains of any spring? Can anyone tell me what it looks like and where it goes please?

Pretty please?

Mind you the inconvenience of having to climb over the back seat to open the tailgate is the least of my problems at the moment!

Its a snail spring, hook on either end about 3/4 inch diameter.. They are handed for left and right hand, If I remember rightly the hook in the centre determines the handing.

:D

Have a look at ebay item number 140188002662

I had the same problem.

Mine wasn't a spring thing though.

After doing as you did (lots of climbing over seats and door disassembly and WD40) someone pointed out that it was the OUTSIDE door handle assembly that needed greasing (even though it went up and down, somepart wasn't working).

Never had the same trouble since - just got to be careful not too use too much grease or you get it on your pinkies everythime you open the door.

a bloke i know has replaced this spring on the tailgate lock and its stopped the the button from dropping great job done then. but when he shut the door to try it it wouldnt open in or out. door card is not back on yet so can see from the inside looks like the short rod that connects to the opening handle is not conected to anything. anyone know where this rod goes and how its attatched cant see any clips that may have come off

I had this problem it was nothing to do with springs or lube although I did take the time to do them whilst i was at it. On mine one of the little pressed steel clips that hold the operating rod to the external handle mechanism had pinged off - an absolute b*st*rd to access unless you got lil' hands but still do-able. I had to remove everything, reassemble the rods and then re-fit it all as a sub-assemblies, it took me about three hours.

I've owned my 1990 200TDI Discovery for 23 years, and the tailgate lock has just failed, so I can't complain. Symptoms are that the tailgate will lock and unlock from the driver's door central locking with the key. The tailgate will lock with the key in the tailgate door, but it will not unlock. The key just turns anticlockwise with no resistance, then comes to a halt after half a turn. So, after reading many threads on this forum I got a lock spring off Ebay, and started the job with my Factory workshop manual section 76-9, my Haynes Manual, Chapter 12-14 and the instructions from the spring supplier.
I photographed all the linkages, and carefully stripped it down.
What could possibly go wrong? Well, the dumb confession is that with the lock completely free to move and disconnected, I can't get it out of the door. I tried for an hour, up, down, left, right, rotating on all axes. The lock fouls the steel panels. The instructions are to withdraw the lock and the Y lever while they are still connected together. This seems to be because they could not be reconnected once the lock was installed.
It appears to me that if the two were separated, the lock could possibly just be removed, as it's this linkage that fouls up.
So I put the whole lot back.
This may be unique to the tailgate, rather than the other doors. I'd be grateful for any advice on this issue, which really should be the simplest part of this job.
Also, is the broken spring diagnosis likely to be correct with these symptoms?
Many thanks.
Nick.
