Hi, i have a suspected broken crankshaft on my discovery 4, i have been looking around at various places to get quotes for an engine rebuild, does anybody here have any recommendations of decent places to try?

so far i have a quote from dieselheads(just over 6k all in), maltings off road (8500+vat)

im stuck at where to look, maltings i know are local to me and hear good things but its a big difference in price

Welcome to to LZ.

I would say 6k is to cheap.
But do some research as there are plenty of crooks in the engine rebuild/replacement game.

These two are always mentioned in a positive light.
Oval autos Maidstone
MDSR Midlands I think?

Welcome :).

Please remember it may not be rebuildable when they look at it closer, then the price will/could escalate even more.
How/when did it happen?
Suspected?

we had a new earth strap installed and was working fine, turned on and off a few times and was fine, then my wife was heading home from work and she said it started vibrating when she went over 70mph, she then kept it under 70, she was near her exit on the motorway and it started rattling and all of a sudden the car came to a halt, she luckily managed to get it off the motorway onto the hard shoulder, had the aa on it and they couldn't turn it? then a local garage has had the under carriage off and said they cant manually turn the crank so they suspect its the crankshaft :(

Sounds like the crankshaft. As above. It might not be rebuildable, it depends on the block being damaged or not. These compacted iron blocks aren't particularly durable, so if a rod gets caught between the rotating crank and block, the block will crack, rendering it as scrap. A short block is then the only option, requiring your heads and all ancillaries be swapped over. It's sad but there a reason D4s with engine failure often get sold as spares or repairs, or simply stripped for parts, as engine failure often costs more to repair than the vehicle is worth.

Thank you all for your advice. We have decided to sell for what we can get for it and go to a different car altogether. It's really put me off another land rover though. Anybody wanna buy it? 😂
