Hi all had a bum clencher of a moment today when the brake pedal decided it wanted to meet with the floor. Over the past couple of weeks the abs fault has bleeped on the dash and then gone off I've checked for leaks and fluid level but all ok. Question is is the boost pump on its way out or should i be looking elsewhere. All advice gratefully received

Thanks for replying no clicking sound and pump seem to run ok key in position2 pump runs till up too pressure then shuts off and when you press brake pedal it cuts back in for a few seconds and then off again.
 
If it comes on on each pedal press the accumulator is shot. Should only run every 5 or thereabouts.
 
Wife just told me that the abs warning flashes when you have to brake hard would that be accumulator as well
 
Mine flashed all three brake warning lights when the accumulator was shot. It was a quick flash, but it did it every time the pedal was pressed.

If your pump is running every press the accumulator is not doing it's job properly.

Cheap and quick to put a new one in. 5 mins work under the bonnet. I'd start there.

a naff accumulator will not let the pedal sink to the floor.

True, there should always be hydrostatic braking on the front wheels whether there is stored fluid pressure or not. But without stored fluid pressure you don't get any rear brakes.
 
Hi all just an update got a replacement pump accumulator and pressure switch from Emmotts (£125) and swapped the accumulator over and so far so good no lights under heavy braking. The only problem is that with having brakes that work properly it's taking a bit of getting used to and not pinning your nose to the windscreen
 
Disconnect the (black) ABS Relay in the engine bay fusebox, this prevents the pump pressurising the system. I had mine out when working as the pump running was peeing me off, turn on the ignition, abs light will stay on. But you can feel the pedal better (either by hand or foot, not driving) and see if there's any problems. It would normally indicate a master cylinder problem, because you have no external leaks that does not mean it couldn't be internal. The brake fluid colour is it desert wine colour ? or has it gone black. The pedal pushrod could be wet with fluid and indicting the inner seals has or are starting to go. Check the fluid daily and if you can mark the level using a sharpie, a simple ---- will do, otherwise the MOT testers will think something is a miss. If you are loosing the fluid then, park on a clean piece of land and then using a broom handle and a hole drilled into a piece of wood 12" long, you can jam up a pumped up pedal onto the seat and leave overnight. if the handle as dropped or gone off pressure. You should then see any leaks, I find looking at night, better as the fluid shines. (leave your Suspension up on high, helps looking around)
 
Changed the accumulator last night with second hand unit from Emmotts and completely purged the system total of 4.5 lts dot 4 fluid and yes the fluid that came out was black. Does that mean seals are degrading. Doesn't lose any fluid though.

Probably. Mine was too. I had to go back and bleed it again because I let the level get too low in the reservoir the first time and air got in. Took litres just to bleed the power boost after that - thought I'd got the last out and then just as I was about to tighten up a tiny bubble would squeeze out. Mine seemed fine afterwards but I decided to change all the disks and pads and calipers and thought, what the heck and did the master cylinder (second-hand) too. I was going to take the old one apart and assess how bad it was but no time so far. One day!

More likely it's black due to water contamination reacting with the metal of the pipes etc. Brake fluid is hygroscopic.
