Surely in those circumstances it is important to get somewhere safe until the morning. Or, at least both be in one vehicle. Did either have survival gear... coats, shovels, etc?

Do you have to take halfshafts out? Just drive in difflock till you can get somewhere easier ( and warmer).
How far are you from civilisation. Can you, at least, get somewhere to get warm and have a decent meal and a cup of coffee?
