You got water coming from the bleed pipe to the expansion tank? If it's blocked it will not bleed any air out of the system.

fraid not - if its not circulating and is down to radiator , best thing can do is to remove and flush with some central heating chemicals

Pull the pipe off, fit a bit of clear tube to the rad and tie the up to the bonnet then try squeezing the hoses rapidly with the engine idling and see how much air comes out.

The other week I changed a top hose two overheats later I got the air lock out fine at idel as soon as worked overheat so you must be Absolutely sure you have no air in system

n18rks where in Rayleigh do you live, if you want a second look/opinion?

In The Chase, just before you get to Grove Road coming up from Bull Lane- Oxford Blue P38 - normally found with the hood up.

i would welcome a 2nd opinion

Which pipe are you referring to > bleed pipe at top of rad i am guessing ?

Who did the head gaskets? Also try putting a hose in the expansion tank running and disconnect hoses at thermostat to see what flow you have

Mr ZZR1200 popped round this AM as arranged (Thank You for your time and P38 knowledge that you shared) , before he arrived i had the engine warmed up so he could see the hot at the top and cold at the bottom phenomenom.

As said, on arrival the radiator was hot at the top and cold at the bottom-we discussed what i had done, what i had changed and what results i had seen. I showed him the mangled open thermostat which was to be my next step to confirm circulation/flow through the radiator. Before i fitted this Mr ZZR1200 set up his pressure test equipment and proceeded to pressurise the system and check for leaks etc. - conclusion was that there was a miniscule drop and not sufficient enough to cause the overheating. In the end we agreed, after a lot of deliberating that we had to fit the mangled open thermostat before going any further.

This afternoon, changed the thermostat and filled her up really trying to remove all air locks by filling radiator. top hose and matrix separately - warmed her up on the driveway - the radiator as i hoped did get hot all over - this meant that the circulation problem was to do with the thermostat not opening - yes the thermostat that i had already changed twice.

Took her out on a test run and apart from the temp needle indicating a lower temperature than normal, everything was ok - managed 20 miles with absolutely no problems at all (before i could only do a couple of miles before she overheated) the only other thought from MrZZR1200 was that the expansion tank cap was faulty ie allowing pressure to be expelled thus not allowing the system to get hot enough to open the thermostat.

Suggestion now is to get a new thermostat and expansion tank cap - i will fit them next weekend and Mr ZZR1200 is going to pop round and look at the radiator/thermostat etc through his heat camera and see if it working as it should.

Once again, thanks Mr ZZR1200 for your time and knowledge in helping me resolve this problem.

Yer ha nice one no cooked heads, I think you need to look into options of makers of thermo and best one to get and talk to the supplier ....

Unless pushed for time I generally buy o/e thermostats and expansion bottle caps, there are so many poor quality ones out there it's not worth the hassle.

A question for the assembled masses here, Island 4x4 only list an "OEM Quality Thermostat" (no ****part crap listed) and a "quality part header tank pressure cap".

I can understand the "Stealer Parts" route and reason, I've dealt with Island before and never had a problem, but I do own a dozzel and not purchased any parts for a V8 from them.

Anybody purchased the above items from Island 4x4 and if so had any problems with them???
