Its a 2005 TD4 - I think I am correct in assuming no in-tank pump, just pump under driver rear wheel arch and the main engine pump.

New fuel filter fitted about 4 -5 weeks ago (routine service)

Pump at wheel arch failed after about 5 miles of filling up with diesel - no sign of rough running so I am assuming recent fill up not significant. Tapped the pump and it started to run again but sounding rough with the engine sometimes losing power. (eng management light flashing when this happens)

New pump fitted - car running fine but pump very noisy, just usual pump noise but louder! can be heard above engine running.

Pump will run for 30 -40 seconds when ignition switched on without starting, it then shuts off and seems to stay that way - perhaps faulty pressure switch but not certain - car may have always done this but not noticable with the quiet pump.

Car fires instantly, hot or cold - no black smoke.

Got a replacement (new) pump, makes same loud noise as the last one:doh:

Again car running fine but pump runs as above without engine being started.

So, do I just put it down to the replacement pump (non-landrover) being noisy and live with it (it might be quieter with a sound deadening mat around it) or investigate further. Only thing I can think of is, assuming dirty fuel, has this clogged the new filter and the pump is noisy because its struggling to get fuel through the filter. If this is the case would the car be down on power:confused: As its not - can I discount the blocked filter theory.

And finally - looking at the fuel flow it apprears to come from the tank, through the sedimenter, through the pump first then through the filter then to the engine.

You don't have an in-tank pump.

You don't have a pressure switch issue.

It is worth taking out the fuel sender/pick up unit to check if you have picked up anything in that fill up.

Check the direction of flow on the filter, I've heard it can cause problems if it's fitted the wrong way.

Two pumps making the same noise obviously suggests that it's caused by something else. You don't seem to suffer fuel starvation so it seems the pump is coping with demand but perhaps it's under greater load due to some restriction.
 
I have an older TD4 and its normal for the pump to run with ignition on only (engine not started) and then cuts out when the pressure has reached its max as per pressure switch..........

Some pumps get noisy coz air has got into the fuel line,, maybe worth checking the lines and connections for air leaks between tank and pump.. Good luck

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have exactly the same problem except I've got a 52 reg TD4 so assume its an in-tank pump. On second new pump and can still hear it over the noise of the engine.

you have two pmps [in tank ] [in engine bay] but getting back to the other problem i agree with chaser ****e in the tank :)

I have this exact problem at the moment since my mechanic changed the pump -

Please let me know if/how you resolved it :)
 
No I never got to the bottom of it, pump still whines away, just decided to put up with it, you get used to it after a while:rolleyes:

Do you know the make of the pump your mechanic fitted?
 
This problem can occur do to air leaking into the pipes on the suction side of the pump. This is a high probability seeing that you have broken the connections.
Carefully strip, clean and remake all joints between the tank and the pump. especially the quick disconnect joint. Make sure the sealing ring in the pipe isn't misplaced or damaged at this joint.

It was a bosch , how about you ?

I doubt its the pump itself and more what vic.middleton said prehaps.
 
I cannot remember the exact initials but something along the lines of PCW was the make of mine, but as its not Bosch, thats interesting that both makes would do the same. Like you I think it could be what vic.middleton says - I must check this out:)
 
I had a spare afternoon today so had a look at the pump again, all connections appear fine and I checked that the fuel filter direction was correct - all OK there.

I still have my original pump which was replaced as it was running intermittently. I connected this up and all was quiet so in my case it looks like its just a noisy pump:(

This is the second pump as I sent the first one back due to excess noise - wish now I had gone for OEM rather than waste £100!
 
it is the OEM pump same problem here, took it out put it in the bin got the origanal landrover pump and its as quit as a mouse so that £100 gives your ears a rest lol. Alway buy landrover parts because you now if you dont it will come back and bite you.
 
The saga continues - I parked up today for 5 mins and when I went to start up the car it wouldn't fire. I listened for the pump priming, not difficult due the the constant whine and there was silence, gave it a tap and away it went.

So the replacement pump has lasted 8 months before doing the same as the original that lasted 4 years!

Its under guarantee but I don't want another one of those on the car so will pick up a genuine quiet Land rover one tomorrow.

I removed the in tank pick up to check for dirt - just in case but it was spotless so looks like that make of pump is just poor quality.
 
At last, I now have a quiet Freelander, I fitted a genuine Land Rover pump and its quiet again. Well worth the extra money to get rid of that whine and pulsing noise.
