Hi Every body, have put a 2.25 3 bearing petrol into my series 3 with the fly wheel and clutch on it that came wih the engine. i know the engine is ex military but was 12 volt but to my dismay the starter that i pulled from my old engine which was a 2.5 petrol does not work on the flywheel it just spins.
where the teeth a different size on various flywheels does anyone know. the starter is a lucas type with solanods built into it rather than separate.
will my 2.5 petrol engine flywheel fit my 3 bearing engine as that seems to be a way that i may get it to work?

I thought the bendix was stuck as well but changed it for an identical starter which has done the same. im wondering if the teeth are not different if the reach is different instead.

The flywheel ring gear has got all of its teeth hasn't it? Just try moving the car a couple of inches and see if it catches then. Also try testing the spare starter on a bench to see if it is throwing the bendix.

Your pre engaged 2.5 starter won't work its a 9 tooth gear helix type, Bendix type 11 tooth is what you need

^ what he said.
They're completely different part number which should give a clue. You actually buy the 11t bendix (244711) separately but I wouldn't like to guarantee it would fit (worth a try though as its a lot cheaper than a starter motor)

+1 on the above, the standard starter for petrol two and a quarter had a solenoid on the bulkhead
