Hello, i am attempting to repair a freelander 1 for a friend ,my hobby is mechanic and îm specialized for mercedes w202.
The symptoms :
The freelander 1 year 2001 loose gradually the reverse gear and finish to loose all gears......
The speedometer indicate 220km/h and credit 1 km every 20 seconds....
When you stop contact, it’s ok, no indicate speed and no credit kilometers

the diagnosys software indicate abs right and left sensors problems and vehicule speed sensor problem.

the things that i have made after the symptoms
First i have inspected the harness from the twist plug and take all valors, from pins...all are in tolerance for freelander

second a flush of the gearbox jatco jf 506e taking special attention to not touch the anchor band, and following the technical documentation.

And now when the car is cold engage gear nothing happens, but one or two minutes later engage drive and want to go to start since flushing i must to verify if i can engage drive cold and want to start without waitin 1 minute.

The things i must have to do ...find speed sensor vehicule, where is it ? Change speed sensor abs.....

my idea : can the ecu disactivate reverse gear as a security because « thinking » the car is running ?
Or reverse piston problem, ? Or blocked solenoids even if the valor is good ?

thank you to help me to save it for car breakers

First things first. The speedometer reading and distance are taken from the ABS system, so issues with sensors will cause errors in the display.

The gearbox issue is more difficult to solve, but it could be broken pistons, or bad clutches, or a combination of both.

If you have 2 or more failed abs sensors it won't drive. You need to fix at least 1 of them to get it to drive. Ideally fix both.

Yes I agree with hippo here, fix the faulty and sensors first....although when I had 2 or more faulty abs sensors the car still drove, just the Speedo didn't move from zero and I had 2 amigo and the red handbrake lights on. There are 2 speed sensors in the box also, but unsure what faults you,d get if these were faulty.

Hello thank you for your interest, with my diag WOW i detect front left an front right, sensors so i have unplug them and no change speedometer is still at 220 km/h no light .....tomorrow î’m going to unplug rear left and right to see what happens.......

Think you need them plugged in or who knows what crazy errors you may get.

You've not unplugged ya auto box have you?

That's interesting. I didn’t know the TCM took speed information from the CAN. I assumed it took its speed information from the box output speed sensor.
Interesting.

It uses both reference options as a double check. Hence why when peeps have auto gearbox problems and have gone through the usual resistance checks, led checks etc... I ask them to check for fault codes in all 3 computers: abs, auto and engine. They all work together to orcastrate movement of the vehicle. The auto gearbox computer will not perform as requested by the gear lever if it doesn't see the correct signals from the abs computer. Few diagnostics can read the auto's computer. Same for the abs. Some will read them and say there's no fault codes. In the past i have double checked this with my hawkeye and fault codes are present. Put the other diagnostic on and they're missing.

You have two faulty abs sensors. Your speedo display will turn to maximum kph (mph) and stay there, whenever you turn the ignition key to position 2, with or without the engine running. The kph (mph) total count will constantly count up when this happens, with the Freelander stationary.

The first thing you need to do is fix the 2 abs sensor failts. Your Freelander has 4x abs sensors. If 2 or more abs sensors are faulty at the same time, your automatic gearbox will stop working.

You must fix the two abs sensors first.

He says he's getting no amigo lights with 2x faulty abs sensors according to whatever he's used to scan the vehicle, don't sound right to me... also I've disconnected both front abs sensors from the front end, and the car drove fine?? Changed gear just a smoothly as it did with them connected. Only the Speedo didn't work and dash light up with amigo mils.

I've seen it happen on a Td4 auto FL1 before. Not unusual for someone to damage both fronts when doing major brake repair work if they're rough with it. Heat and whacking it. It was on a car with a lot of faults. Long story but the wheels are used as a backup reference signal. Abs can't cope with more than one failed wheel sensor. Theres a big fred on ere somewhere. Why yours is able to drive I have no idea. May be different abs unit. There were slight differences between the differing years. The OP's got no drive, speedo jumps to max, two failed abs sensors and distance counting up fast while stationary. It's doing 220kmph while stationary, so it won't take long to get to the next oil service. ;)

is the car auto or manual if it is Auto then the seals in the gear box could be on there way out as when it gets warm the seals tend to go a bit better

Note: The engine is switched off, with electics on only, in the pic. Speedo sat at max and mpg counting up.

Hello i.ve inspected all abs sensors, and disconnect them . No effects.
Hippo it is exactly as your picture.....just electrics, and also when the engine is on.
Even i realised that i.ve disconnect abs sensor front, and abs sensors rear not at same time..
Perhaps i have to make that and find new sensors...

You can't fix the ABS by disconnecting the sensors, as the controller module will still show no sensor is a fault.
Replacement is the only cure.

When you connect all 4 abs sensors, your abs module can see 2 of them are faulty.

If you disconnect the 2 working abs sensors, the abs module will see their connection status as faulty too. It will then think all abs sensors are faulty.

1 faulty abs sensor = speedo ok
2 faulty abs sensor = speedo reads maximum
3 faulty abs sensor = speedo reads maximum
4 faulty abs sensor = speedo reads maximum

Hint: you need to buy 2x new abs sensors and fit them.

You have to diagnose and repair the Freelander in small steps. Step 1 = replace the abs sensors which report as failed when connected.

There are different abs sensors available for different years of manufacture of Freelander 1. Make sure you buy the correct sensors. If you don't know which to buy, ask.

I might just disconnect my ABS sensors so I can see my L Series fly at 220kmh :D

Check yer breaks work first and yer tires have good tread. Yer islands quite small. You could be in australia before you know it.

You'll also need to put an auto gearbox in it. At 84kg it would be wise to tie it down, in the boot.

I have an auto box - its in me bonce - and the solenoids never fail :D

Well, not often anyway!

And this is a 2001 (or pre facelift) model with more that one faulty abs sensor, and no amigos showing?????

Just had to check for my own sanity that I wasn't going mad..This is what my dash displays with the 2 front abs sensors disconnected and handbreak down. My car still drives as normal, only Speedo does not move....interesting that different years models etc present what seems like the same fault in different ways.

To the OP are your abs sensors the cylindrical ones that push in, or the ones held in with a bolt like the post face lift one's.
