Just had to check for my own sanity that I wasn't going mad..This is what my dash displays with the 2 front abs sensors disconnected and handbreak down. My car still drives as normal, only Speedo does not move....interesting that different years models etc present what seems like the same fault in different ways.

My mother in law's 2001 V6 is the same.
Just gives 3 amigos, but drives just fine.

To the OP are your abs sensors the cylindrical ones that push in, or the ones held in with a bolt like the post face lift one's.
Yer lucky then. The OP isn't. There's a number of small changes between years and firmware versions. But in general... loss of auto box drive and speedo on max while the engine is off and stationary, is down to faulty abs sensors. Measure their loop resistance to confirm they're open circuit when this happens.

The auto box changed slightly didn't it. Wasn't it the intermediate speed sensor that was removed? If it was, maybe this has a bearing on what the ABS module does?

Yes that was removed on later builds. Of the sensors in the auto box, it was the one most likely to fail. There wasn't a massive failure rate or a major concern. But enough for lr to notice and make changes. It may have been jatco themselves that pushed for change instead of lr. They removed pins 3 and 4 on the barrel connecters which normally triggers someone asking about me resistance video, because theirs has the pins missing.

I don't think it would trigger a difference in relation to the data shared from the abs.

It's one of those bonkers situations. They can do without that sensor by making calculations from the others. They know the engine revs and vehicle speed so they can work out if the auto box is slipping. So in theory they didn't need to remove it. Instead ignore it. An update of the auto's computer to run in such a way to ignore it and make the calculation if still needed, with a firmware change, would be a suitable fix. It's essentially what they do anyway on the later builds.

We've had a few on ere with the intermediate sensor failing over the years. Stick the later auto computer on it and it's solved. To get to that sensor you need the auto box off the engine, crack it open and pull most of it out, to get to the bolts to remove the gearbox case on the engine side, to get to the sensor. Fare bit of work and risk things could go wrong v's a firmware change.
 
Plus they probably updated the software on the various ECU's over time as well, and not all at the same time. Hence different symptoms depending on what versions each of you have. 3 ECU X Multiple SW variants = lots of combinations.
 
What fault sympthoms does the intermediate sensor failing cause?

I've no idea, but it can't be to unreliable, as the V6 I'm sorting at the moment has only ever had the 2/4 duty solenoid in its life, and I fitted it. Its on 76k miles now, but I don't know how long the sensor is supposed to last.
 
yep thats why I ask, mines on 145k and only had the 3 duty solinoids changed (which I changed) since ive had it from 2009 and now has started to slip on gear change 3 to 4 to 5... which I presume is a cracked reverse piston as its in that date range and all sympthoms point to that, but now this gear box sensor interests me? could this cause this slipage?o_O

still find it crazy that 2 faulty abs sensors and no amigos, if mine has the slightest amount of crap on the sensors, it throws up an amigo or 3...In fact I frightened to fart while driving it incase an Amigo takes offence and perks up:eek:

Hmmmm I might pop them 2 pins out of the connector and see what happens without that sensor connected.

And my I930 is refusing to connect to any module on it, except giving me live engine data. :mad::mad::mad:

Leave it alone. Your auto's computer needs the sensor if it's the early version. Pulling it's legs off will hurt it.

The intermediate sensor very rarely fails. Your's would have failed years ago if it was going to fail. The resistance test will tell you if it's ok.
 
Error lamps on the dash are a good thing. They're telling you something is wrong. It may be annoying but your Freelander is trying to help you.

This is what mine's like fix one thing then another breaks..even when the car is sat unused something will break just for fun...I also have problems with diags connecting to mine, icarsoft say the early 2001 freelander are hit n miss with diagnostics, and asked me to send their i930 back to them for full refund. They obviously new it may have problems with my year of freelander.

This seems to be the way it is sometimes. :(
When I drove it home, the MIL was on, the temperature gauge was maxed out, the high temperature warning light was on, and the fans ran at full speed.
Also the PS pump was howling, as the fluid was being pumped out the cracked pipe.
However there wasn't any sign of the ABS warning light.

So I fixed the PS pipe, and replaced the thermostat and faulty temperature sensor, so all those issues were fixed.

Now out of nowhere, the bloody ABS light is on. :mad:
I also have problems with diags connecting to mine, icarsoft say the early 2001 freelander are hit n miss with diagnostics, and asked me to send their i930 back to them for full refund. They obviously new it may have problems with my year of freelander.
My I930 has connected to this very vehicle in the past, which is why I knew the 2/4 duty solenoid had failed.
When I was testing the I930 out, I could connect to every module on this vehicle, ABS, TCM, ECU, CC, Ipack, CCU, the lot. Now I need to find out what is up with the ABS, the I930 won't connect to anything, except get corrupted live data from the engine ECU. :mad:

I did update the firmware in the I930 a while back, I'm wondering if that update has screwed up the ability to read the 2001 V6 modules.:(

This is the main reason I bought it these pesty Amigos:(, now I have to check them one by one to see which is faulty, even sensors that read ok in resistance can be faulty:eek:, I have to go around the car replacing with a know good one until the Amigos bugger off..:mad:

I think from what I remember,this is all I got from mine, updated firmware still the same.
