TONIGHT
power steering pump replaced!
Thanks to 200tdiayre for supplying me with a 200tdi unit, which I told him would be the same as my 3.5 v8!
Oh, how wrong was i??
Well, kinda!
The pump itself is the same. The exterior portion of the driveshaft is slightly longer on a v8 fitment but not to the extent that it matters, because in both tdi and v8 formats the pulley flange is pressed well onto the shaft.
I was expecting a quick swap but it soon became apparent that the PCD of the pulley mounting bolts was much smaller on the tdi, indeed the tdi uses M6 bolts and the v8 M8.
At this point I should mention that a defender 200tdi pump has the same flange as my disco v8 but a disco tdi pump is different.
It turns out that due to the plentiful nature of disco tdi pumps a lot of defender owners perform this swap to save time/money finding a defender specific pump.
It did not take much effort, two hours and it was running, but I had to pull the flange off both pumps and then sweat the v8 flange onto the tdi pump.
I was careful to align the markings on the old pump shaft with the position of the flange on the new pump to make sure the flange was fitted at the correct position on the shaft.
This worked as the belts are exactly true when fitted to the engine
The fault with my old pump was the front bearing, this is kinda exposed and was absolutely shot to ****, to the extent that it fell apart when I removed the mudshield.
I have packed the mudshield with grease now in attempt to keep the mud at bay!
Anyway, there you go.
Tomorrow I may get some pics up of the beginnings of my onboard air upgrade, starting with a 9ltr fire extinguisher than I purchased last night.
The first challenge with that it to modify the bottle fitting to get it to accept a fitting that I can work with.
Cheers boys
