I considering breaking my Disco I've been offered another Landy with a V8. The sound track vs mpg is a really challenging one to choose lol.
 
Tell me about it mate. I am the guy who is considering changing to diesel because of the mpg, but then I after a power slide session in a field and/or all the other entertaining antics I know it would be utterly ridiculous to let that amount of fun go.

The problem I have is that if I want to make a long haul laning trip, I'm looking at 300 quid, vs maybe 150 on diesel, even better if it's on oil. Laning/offloading isn't so bad in the v8 cos it's mainly on tickover just with those grintastic short stabs, but the motorway is MURDER. 2 hours at 60mph at 12mpg? You do the maths. I'm looking at best part of a full tank to get to south Wales :(

As such, I can't afford to go places in the v8, but then again what's the point in going somewhere if you're not going to love it when you get there.

Would I rather stay local, have a great time and amazing banter, or would i rather explore more of the country in a diseasel like everyone else. if you saw that video on the previous page in that gully climb at park wood, the v8 has the ability to make people cheer and clap. It makes people happy and tbh I enjoy entertaining.

I really can't decide what's best, but tbh for now I'm not rushing into it because I love that gutsy v8 motor. Ok it leaks oil like there's no tomorrow and it gets a bit hot under the collar, but it's a ****ing beast.

Excalty the issue I have. We are heading to Wales next month and would be easier twice as high fuel cost with a V8 but with two dirty great exhaust pipes hanging out the back would you really care???
I'm still looking into Durmax V8 turbo diesels, probably be just as bad on fuel but at least I'm trying to find a happy medium! :lol:
 
The thing which is really making it a challenge for me is after I spend a couple hundred on a tdi scrapper, about 500 on tuning it up (cos it has to have the power, I'm not gonna let myself lose out on grin AND power) and a **** load of man hours physically removing the thing, changing the mounts, new clutch, timing belt blah blah blah, I bet it will cost me well over a grand to convert to tdi, and then after all that time and money I don't like it, what was the feckin point?

I'd be happier sat there in the garage with the v8 ticking over than out in Wales in a diseasel I can't stand listening to. And I like my engine oil like honey, not marmite thank you. Plus a thousand pounds of fuel goes a long way, not to mention all the time "wasted"...

The other side of it is that times are hard now and we all have to make cutbacks, so who's to say I should be cruising around in a car that averages 6mpg on the typical off road day?

I dunno, maybe when there's space at work I'll buy a scrapper, do the work and get it MOT'd, bang a lift on it and some Tyres, strip the interior out and take it offroading and see how I like it. Worst case I sell it again and nothing lost.

Too true, you have the conversation cost to factor in.
Well buy my recently re-built 300tdi lump and that'll give me the excuse to get a V8. :lol:

2. you'll want more than 50p for it, and thats about how much i want ot give for a diesel. unrealistic i know... :)
 
:lol: don't blame ya mate. **** it, keep the V8 and smile everytime you pass a tdi on the way to the petrol station.

What's the point of V8 power when you can't use it anywhere but locally?

If I was you and had money and space for it, I'd get a tdi as well tbh

If i was going to drive something that gave me the mpg of a V8 Landy i would at least want to be going fooking quick :D

TDi for offroading, V8 for GT car ;)
 
TBH Sam I was in the same boat but glad I did the TDI swap.
How often do u drive flat footed every where to need the power?
Also a TDI moves quicker than you think with a little tweak, and still cheap to run.
I was using the V8 as a third car as too expensive to run, now it's a TDI I am using it as a daily!!
Drive a disco TDI for a month and see how you get on!!
Don't get me wrong I still miss the v8 noise and power but after a few months you learn to live without it.

Tbh it's not the absolute power, because the v8 is 150bhp if I'm lucky, probably more like 120 these days. A tdi is the same as that, with easily as much torque and more usuable down low.

BUT I'm a v8 guy and it's as simple as that. Therefore I have a hard time coming round ton the fact that a dirty diesel is a better option than the v8 which makes me happy and I love.

I think co-pang-yang has got the jist of it: it's not what's best that is necessarily the best choice, it's what makes you happy.

My v8 is pretty decent under water, no problem at all in fresh water, and it only adds to the excitement.

Also yes I can only use it locally. OR I save up the fuel for a long distance trip.

The top and bottom is its a job I don't REALLY need to do, I just know that I should, but that's emotions aside.

Plus, I do like the showmanship I can't deny, and nobody can deny it's ****ing lovely to hear that thing slugging up a hill :)

Point very much taken and already decided actually: if a car comes up that is cheap/MOT fail etc I'll do the work on it and try it out. Real world fuel consumption test, on and off road. Then I'll either keep or sell.

But for the time being, more antics :)

Video was taken on Sunday 9th, a mate of mine had a couple of mates who were on there with a crosser and a trials, they told him and he asked me if I wanted to pop down in my disco aswell.

So i've been a member of the forum for a while now, i've posted a fair bit, i've given some people some help, and i've taken LOADS of help from others :eek: but i've never posted up any pics of what i've been working on since January!

So, i took a few shots at the weekend to sort that out.

Brief spec is:

'92 3.5 V8 5 Door 7 Seat Twin Sunroof.
118,000 miles.
Engine stock, apart from sealed and vented distributor, and smaller centre silencer/no rear silencer.
Transmission stock, apart from cross drilled input gear.
Twin ARB air lockers.
3" lift, on Bearmach and Procomp.
Full polybush.
Rebuilt axles, new seals/bearings throughout.
Electric fans/HD 4 row radiator.
Front arches & sills replaced, various other welding. (Boot floor patched up, realistcally needs replacing but cba)

Etc etc etc, you can see most of it anyway! :D

I'm looking forward to seeing some comments!

very nice indeed:) we have just come back to disco ownership after a 4 year painfull experience with volvo
, ours is to say the least standard by comparison to yours but we love it just the same
