Hi,

Every time I post it seems to be about a problem so sorry. I also keep saying I'm scrapping the RR and yet here we are 5 years on :)

So the latest bit of fun is that I went to take the kids to school this morning and heard a horrible grinding noise from the drivers read wheel, like metal on metal. Only when moving and seems to be worse when going forward, then reversing back.

I initially thought brake pads, but on inspections looks like there's plenty left on them, so I started shaking the disc shield round the disc, then I saw a screw drop down. Using a bit of force I managed to get the screw out of the cover, I tried moving the car again and the noise was still there.

I'd like help identifying the screw first off, that might give me a bit of a clue, here is it, it looks like a 5mm Hex socket:

As I said I keep threatening to scrap it but it's got 10months MOT and I annoyingly still love driving it, so see what's up with it this time :D

Thanks! The handbrake doesn't work really at all - could explain a few things! A garage replaced the handbrake shoes for me last year - I don't think they had a clue what they were doing to be honest.

I just googled it and it is the Handbrake shoe hold down!! 👏 What a start!! Now to figure out how to get it back on properly, any ideas? I will research too.

Remove the wheel.
remove the caliper.
Back off the adjuster.
remove a screw.
take off the disc.

Replace and then reverse procedure:).

You will probably best get a new set, first as there should be a spring and a washer (thing) chances are they are mangled.

Brilliant, thanks! Yeah will get them ordered now, might as well put new handbrake shoes on them too whilst I'm at it.

Note they say in the manual to renew the caliper bolts too.

Think its a CYA on land rovers part, up to you.

Also you need to follow the bedding in procedure if fitting new.
When I looked at mine they appeared to have plenty of meat left. as at the end of the day they are only applied when vehicle is stationary. If they were new last year don't see they would need it.

Did the handbrake work good after they did the work? wondering if they didn't do a "bedding "procedure.

Nice 1, if I'm going to do it I might as well do it right.

Now going totally again that, I can't get the parts until early next week and I should be going away this weekend. Would I be stupid to put the screw back in for the weekend and go away (40 miles drive)?

You need disc off to do it as the spring and clipcan only fitted that way.

theres a chance the bits are recoverable when you take the disc off. but any good motofactor would probably have them to match.

No it never worked properly, worked enough to barely get it through the MOT but they told me it was the cable that had stretched and that was the issue and wanted a stupid amount to fit a new one. They weren't RR speciailists - I only use specialits now, but they can't fit me in for at least a week - pretty comfortable in doing this myself to be honest. Shouldn't be too much work.

Brilliant, I'll get the disc off tonight and see what I can do, not going to risk safety for the sake of a few days.
 
the slot in the back plate may have rotted out, if so get a bolt and 2 washers fit a washer over the end of the bolt pass through the spring shoe and back plate put other washer over bolt use a nylonnut and do up just enough to apply tension on spring, will work till you get a new back plate

Just to close this off! This was 100% what it was! That's exactly the solition I used too! Thanks badfuffy! Saved me alot of effort.

RR will sadly be gone in Oct (probably scrapped) Love it, but far too many issues popping up recently, almost weekly. This fix will keep me going until then
