Thanks for this thread guys - I made the changes to my 200 in a 90 over the last few days and it has transformed her!!

Cant believe Ive only just had the bottle to do this.
I didnt have much time so i did all the adjustments in one go and to minimise the chance of smoking i went of the minimum adjustment suggested in V8's Guide/explaination and hoped for the best.
So I adjusted too.

Torx - 1 Turn
star wheel - 180Deg
Diaphram - 90Deg

and even with those small adjustments BLOODY HELL!! what a difference it picks up and gose much better, I can pull out of junctions with confidence and overtake going uphill!!

Think i may tweak the Torx a little more because after i re-read i notice it says between 1 1/2 - 2 Turns and i only went 1 Turn so might push that a little more.

CHEERS V8!

should really do this to my dads 300, but he never listens to my wacky ideas about tuning engines. the guy used to build rally cars, but now he prefers standard. ugh!

i might have to get him to read this thread :D

Go for it,if you mark the position of everything you can put it back if your not happy.
The thing is,most of these engines have got 100000+ miles on them and the pump is mechanical with lots of moving parts, over the years things get worn so by now it's performing less than when it came out of the factory. All your doing by tweaking the pump is putting it back to what it should be (or a little more)
:D :D

well got round to doing this today on mine, had car since nov and wow what a difference..one question thow, you say to keep turning the toothed gear 1/4 at a time until it smokes...mine never started smoking so how much s too much on that. only starte smoking on the last step at 120 degrees so need to turn it back abit, but only seemed to smoke on 1st accelerating, going to run it tomorrow to see what happens.

Interested to hear the results on this.

The toothed gear (starwheel) controls the fuel delivery rate,if you turn it clockwise it moves down allowing the diaphragm to move down further speeding up how fast the fuel goes in,if its adjusted too far you will get smoke from pulling away right through to full power. It's impossible to say how much is too much as all pumps could be in a different position, so the idea is to go 1/4 of a turn at a time until it smokes a lot all through the revs (on the road, not stood still) and then turn it back till the smoke is not too excessive.
When i did mine it was the same,it didn't smoke so i turned it 360 degrees and left it at that. :)

fair enough..

i did the torx nut 1st 2 turns, ran it up and down street no smoke,

i then did star wheel 360...no smoke, turned it another 180 no smoke..turned it another 180 (so 720 in total) and no smoke..gave up at that (may turn it back 360).

then did diapfram and went to 120 degrees (measured) and got smoke undr harsh acceleration but nothing then through 2nd and 3rd,,like i say il give it a good go tomorrow but weather was crap today so i gave up lol.

Mines like that when you give it some ,as long as its not billowing out thick black smoke you'll be fine.

been following this thread for ages, really good stuff here.

bit of a chicken with mine (300 manual) cos I've had a few overheating probs in the past.
egr and decat is done (not much diffrence).
I've now moved forward and fitted boost, egt and water temp gauges so no excuse for not tweeking her. Does any one else have egt to compare readings with??? oh boost seems good at 1bar (truck is as flat as a witches especially low down with trailer on almost have to low range it for some junctions!!!!)
here we go:behindsofa:

got to go out for a bit back after lunch will have a go at first adjustment then.
I will try and get temp readings for a 'control hill' at a set speed and then compare after tweeks, wondering at what egt temp problems start??

Took this from the link on the first page

An EGT of 720 °C has been
recommended as the maximum safe
temperature for typical modern turbo-diesel
engines. My understanding is that an EGT
of more than 720 °C for an extended period
of time will begin irreversible deterioration of
the turbo-charger metal structure, especially
the turbine housing, exhaust turbine blades
and wastegate valve & seat.

I don't have an egt gauge on mine but its done around 6000 miles now since the tweeks with no probs.
We did a 3000 mile round trip to the south of france last summer fully loaded with the 4 of us,a full roofbox and the boot full with camping gear, most of which was at 80 mph on the motorway in 80 degree heat still with no probs. :) :)

1700 what!!
my gauge is in degrees C truck doesnt seem to go much beyond 600c. but to be honest I havent towed since I fitted the gauge. I'll give it a bit of a blast and see how high it goes, I sort of had 800C in my head as problem temps but dont know where i got this info from!!! Oh probe is in egr hole so pretty accurate.
surprised me how high the temp rises if you labour the engine in too high a gear on full throttle. Post crossed there v8

720c is not far away from what I'm getting now without tweeks or trailer!!! Again not sure where I had 800c as a max temp from.
Commited to having a go now, havent bought gauges for nowt!! this afternoon should tell, must try and get a reading from big hill on dual carrageway befor mods as it can be taken flat out (steeeeep hill) think its lucky to pull 3rd at the mo and with caravan 2nd. will see and post after.:behindsofa:

Well,
diaphragm 90 degrees (prob slightly less)
screw 2 turns in
starwheel 1/2 turn clockwise

did a run first and then after adjusting pump
60mph on flat 0.5 boost EGT temp 320 after tweek same but EGT up to 400
65mph slight incline 1bar boost EGT 450 after tweek boost only 0.7 EGT same 450
70mph slight incline 1 bar boost EGT 600 after tweek boost 0.8 EGT 500
80mph slight incline 1 bar boost EGT 650 after tweek boost 1 bar EGT 580

Flat out up serious long steep hill 60mph maxed out just about holding 3000rpm EGT 600 1bar boost.
after tweek 65mph and still just about climbing BUT bottled it cos...........EGT 800

best change is off boost, seems loads better but will only really see when the trailer is hooked up. Although 800c is a little worrying!! what do you think

Said it before but, excellent thread guys.

I've done a mild tweak on mine, just needed bottom end pulling up a bit.

Has anyone that has done a good tweak noticed any measurable change in fuel economy?

Either way, but must be measurable not just what it seems like??
