I've done a mild tweak on mine, just needed bottom end pulling up a bit.

Has anyone that has done a good tweak noticed any measurable change in fuel economy?

Either way, but must be measurable not just what it seems like??

I did check mine when i did it but its that long ago i can't remember! :rolleyes:
I definitely get more mpg because i don't use kick-down as much ,i do the same 120 mile run to work each week so it was easy to work out the difference,i think it was about 5mpg more after the tweek. :)

slightly worried about egt when it was flogging up that hill today, there must be others with egt gauges fitted to your landy 'come on put my mind at rest' or am I heading to meltdown with the old girl again!!!

Big improvements had on my Disco 300TDi. It's smoking when pulling away so will put the power screw back and see what happens.

il be filling up on monday so will get a better mpg guide after doing the mod..so il keep you posted, could be a few weeks before i fill again though.

pah, silly answer. it's getting done when he's not at the garage :D

ok so i did it, he kinda went along with it.

went for 1.5 turns on torx screw. it smoked a little at lows revs accelerating so left it at that.

it felt like there was slightly more low end pull, up to about 2000rpm.

went to star wheel, physically couldnt turn it more than approx 1/6 of a turn. looking at jons pics, he didnt have much thread sticking out of his star wheel, mine already had about 5mm sticking out. i wound it as i say just less than a quarter of a turn and it basically stopped dead, like it had reached full adjustment.

drive again and felt the same or maybe a tad better mid range, no smoke.

tried diaphragm, the dot was already at 3 oclock. wound it to 9 oclock, same. wound to 12, felt slow. back to 3 oclock felt best, so left it at that.

the pump was brand new last year so maybe it didnt have any adjustment in it?! :rolleyes:

Is there any reputable companies in south Yorkshire that would do this mod whilst taking intonconsideration the egt etc, I want long term reliability and not short term fun so am a little sceptical of going straight in and going by smoke!

It lacks power on boost by the way
 
Just did my torx screw as the rest was done due to big intercooler. Instructions didn't say about this bit.

Marked it up and turned it 1-1/2 and no smoke so done 2 turns and it smoked a bit so settled for 1-3/4 and it smokes very slightly and goes better!!!
 
Blimey Riley, this CANNOT be legal! Just been for a post-adjustment run and, well, not been this chuffed with myself since I discovered the joys of sniffing Evostick. Have to admit, being somewhat long in the tooth, I was a little sceptical of some of the claims being made on this thread but, no, you were all pretty much right. I did it the lazy way (all at once); 1.5 turns on the torux, 1 on the star wheel and 120 degrees on the diaphragm. Slight smoke on max chat, but nothing untoward, BUT a most definite increase in oomph, especially at the top end. Should at this point say I'm running a 1996 300tdi Defender 90 hardtop, manual, 105K. Owned it from new and always had it properly and regularly serviced. For what it is, I thought it went pretty well beforehand. The adjustments made no discernable difference on initial pick-up, but once the turbo was on full song it pretty much flew! In the interest of science(!), I did a before and after run, uphill, between 2 fixed points, through the gears from standstill. Prior to adjustment the run took 27 secs, after 23 secs. Also, beforehand, she was more or less maxed out at 70 to 75mph - I've just had her pushing 90 on a slight uphill gradient! From an old bus with the aerodynamic qualities of a (large) shed! Amazing. There has to be some payoff for this extra urge, either in fuel consumption or wear and tear. I'll monitor and keep you posted. Thanks V8, and all who've corroborated his work.
 
I reckon an intercooler on any diesel engine creates two benefits:

1. It reduces the temperature of the 'charge' thus making it denser, thus increasing the amount of oxygen entering the engine;

2. It reduces the overall temperature of the charge thus reducing the operating temperature of the working engine.

I believe there is a relationship between the cooling effect of the intercooler and the supercharging effect of the turbo.

1. If the turbo is pushing more air through the 'cooler than is designed to do, the cooler will have less effect on the charge, thus engine temps increase with the possiblity of higher EGT , burnt valves etc.

2. If the turbo is pushing the same amount of air through a larger intercooler, the charge will be cooler therefore more dense, therefore will support an increase in fuel from delivery pump.

3. Of course the optimum would be bigger 'cooler, bigger variable vane turbo there more charge therefore the ability to pump in more fuel.

More air without an increase in fuel will not, imo, generate more power.

Mines now done around 8000miles since the tweek with no visible signs of wear or damage so far. It went for mot this week and the emissions were down so low (0.13) the tester checked that the pipe was still in! although that could be the 2stroke oil doing its job:D
As for mpg I'm getting about 5 mpg more than it did before the tweek

That's the 2nd time I've read something about 2 stroke oil in the fuel. What are the benefits of this, V8jon?

If you search on here there's a nice long thread about it but basically modern diesel has the stuff that's bad for the environment but good for your engine taken out of it and by adding a bit of 2stroke oil acts as a cleaner to get rid of all the **** that's built up on the injectors/valves etc.
Mine doesn't smoke as much now even with the pump tweak and the engine is a lot quieter and smoother,even the mrs noticed it was quiet!
 
Just completed the 3-point fuel mod... :D

Fettled with it the 1st time, drove it up the road and back and settled on the following:
1 & a quarter (backed off from 1 & a half) turns on the smoke screw, 90 degrees (backed off from 120) on the diaphram and 270 degrees (backed off from 360 degrees) of a turn on the star wheel.

A hell of a lot more drivable with a much smoother power delivery. Very impressed.

Hi Guys so I have attempted to do the fuel pump mod, did the first part adjusted smoke screw a week ago, easy mod, made a little difference at take off, still pretty sluggish though to be honest. Tried to go deaper today and quickly got stumped as the diaphragm would not come out, undid the 4 screws and removed cover, no problem , diaphragm popped up but doesnt come out, it seams to twist infinately both ways but something blocks its removal, any ideas? Cheers Jim
 
i hope you maked the diafram before you started twisting so you know where to return to..mine was abit stiff to remove at 1st but it should just pull up.

try putting engine under some effort as mine was ok when i first did it and then gradually smoked more in 2nd and 3rd when turbo kicked in, so iv backed it right down again and going to give it another go.
 
Yes I did mark it first.......its not stiff it pushes down, some 5mm, and pulls up some 5mm, but it feals like it hits a solid metalic stop. Just took it for a drive and it drives the same....
