got a gague, boostin around 12-14psi at about 1700rpm. I know it should be .78 bar, so i think the psi converts right? 150k, can certainly hear tubo whistlin n air flowin thru snorkel if thats what you mean?
 
Will this stress my engine out much more? As I got a 300tdi disco at 195k and I don't wonna kill it but could really use a bit more poke when on a motorway.
 
I did this on sunday. Full turn of the star wheel, 100 degrees of the diaphragm and 1.5 turns of the smoke screw. Its made the engine pick up quicker from low revs and and given it more torque, but its still no rocket! :D Although when doing the mod i never got any smoke out the exhaust at any point. Worth turning the diaphragm round a bit more? Or the star wheel? Or should i take 6mm of the turbo actuator arm? ;)
 
Langers- forgive my stupidity, im still on a learning icurve. Re heavy breathing - slight chuffing on removal of oil filler cap, is there a normal amount anyway? And is it worth checking fuel pipes from tank, for wear tear? Will be cleaning intercooler when i get a spare couple days aswell

200Tdi Disco with 113k on the clock - caused a few expressions this morning when in the rain I was 4 wheel drifting around my nearest roundabout :) Well Funny as my daughter would say.

Now there is a little smoke so I will adjust when have the time.

For starters my pump looks quite new when I brought the old girl not so long ago. In the last 2 weeks she has had a service (everything apart from the timing belt) and replaced the centre silencer with a straight through pipe.

I started with 11/2 turns clockwise on the top screw. I didn't get any smoke so could go another 1/4 to 1/2 turn but felt I would do ok with this initially. This produced a smoother (although barely noticiable) pick up from just off the throttle. I am sure it would help in an auto but mine is a manual.

Secondly I removed the screws from the top cover and removed the diaphram. I noticed straight away that the pump was set at its most economical (lowest) setting. I turned the knurled screw clockwise 90 degrees. Assembled and then went for a run. No smoke so turned another 90 degrees and so on. Finally I got to a point where she had gone 420 degrees.

There was still no smoke but to be honest I chickened out going any further. (I have read recently that on some pumps you can turn the screw all the way down before smoke is seen).

This made the engine seem more eager and smoother through the rev range. Also I noticed it quiter.

Now at this point I was at home and decided to drive up the road and do the final diaphram setting at a local industrial estate so at the side of the road I turned the diaphram to its maximum setting - 110-120 degrees.

Fired her up and WOW!!! she went like a stabbed rat!

I intend to revisit the knurled wheel. I will reset the diaphram and then adjust the knurled wheel until smoke is seen and then set the diaphram again.

Finally I have noticed that the engine is ticking over at 1000 RPM so once all done I will reset back to 750-800 RPM.

Another adjustment to be noted (300tdi VE bosch pump might be same on 200Tdi but never worked on one) is the
POWER SCREW AKA The DADDY Screw

This screw is located at the back of the pump under a plastic anti-tamper collar then under this is a steel anti-tamper collar which is easily removed with a screw driver.

Hold the screw in place with a flat blade screwdriver
Undo the locking nut (think its a 13mm but dont quote me)
turn the screw maxium 30 degrees clockwise (12 o'clock to 2 o'clock)
you will have to turn down the tick over after this

I have been running about for over 2years with this adjustment and cannot praise it enough

An increase in power from low - high RPM

This is by far the biggest increase in performance from turning 1 screw 30 degrees

If you are unsure get your Landy to Bolsover and i will be happy to help.

How did that effect mpg,I was told you get bags more power but makes it heavy on fuel.

Yea get bags of power for combined 28 MPG roughly dont really monitor it, but all depends on how i drive her, ive got a boost gauge fitted so i keep a eye on high boost diesel slurping lol
 
This weekend i tweaked mine a bit more. Smoke screw at 1 1/2 turns, star wheel and 1 1/2 turns and diaphragm to 120 degrees. So she now pulls noticeably stronger than previous but still not seen even a small puff of smoke! Fuel economy from the weekends trip (300 miles, 80 miles of it greenlaning) and its returned 29.5mpg. Not to be sniffed at as it was sat at 70mph for the motorway miles, and not hanging about on the back roads either ;)

I did turn it up to maximum on the diaphragm for one test run. I noticed the engine temperature rise significantly however. The off boost performance was brilliant, however the engine then fell 'flat' once the boost came on. With the turbo boost upped it should rocket!

In the end i left it at 120 degrees as i felt this is where she was at the best compromise of fuel consumption/power. If you're happy to be able to accelerate up hills from 60 to 75 to overtake then i'd say you don't need to go any further than that.

Just tweeked the DADDY screw. It pulls more eagerly certainly and now the boost is really noticiable, especially noise wise. Need to adjust this next !!

Just done mine.
Lets be honest here on what to expect.
Yesterday i towed a caravan weighing around 1300kgs and a boot full of tools 60 miles back from where i towed it Thursday. The Disco, 300 TDi manual with 122k on clock, performed ok, she wont win any races and you have to work the box on hills as well as anticipate for things.

So today ive turned first boost screw 1 and a half turns, diaphragm from 9 oclock position to 1 o clock position, and turned the star wheel 3/4 of a turn just to see if i notice any improvement.
I did.

She revs more freely lower down, and is a lot smoother on the revs, she doesnt feel choked up.
She accelerates far far better, and on a road here we call the miley, i joined it with a corsa and kept up with it on hard acceleration from 1st gear start off up to road limit of 60 mph.

But its the free revving that gets my vote. I HAD to be quick on the gears to keep accelerating, whereas i usually just slot it in nice and steady and it makes no difference. But this was quick shifting acceleration.

Ive also noticed, not sure why, but i used to run out of puff at around 3000 rpm, but i was still accelerating and had to change gear at 3500.

Runs a lot quieter too.

Not a single ounce of smoke.

So after seeing the results im toying with a bit more on the boost screw, but to be honest im more than happy with how she drove.

She drove more like a petrol the way she revved freely, and to be honest after booting the balls out of her down the miley she accelerated like one too, far smoother power.

How she will pan out when i stick the caravan back on i dont know, but i certainly feel she is more "driveable" than she was, even to the point of being a bit feisty.

ive been runnin my pump fully wound up for a few months now (not daddy screw) an was more than happy with the extra power- however yesterday i turned the daddy screw about 100° clock wise or 12oclock to 3-30 ish -
wanna see a disco wheely !
DO IT NOW !!!!
 
by the way if your gonna do it you realy want to shorten your actuator arm about 5mm to increase boost an make full use of the extra fuel
