Does it have to be an auto or is it the same for manual?
It's the same for auto and manual as long as it's not got the edc pump

Just seen this thread - so havn't read it all the replies, so this is just a reply to the topic starter.
My 1997 Auto did this to (mine does have the EDC)
Turned out it was a fault No4 Injector which is rare as hens teeth as it has the EDC wire from it.
Managed to find one, all fixed and runs better than ever.
I did have the timing and injector altered to help, but four years later in the end it really didn't want to start or go uphill.
I needed a new injector found a used for £100 - as they are no longer made, and no aftermarket available
Firstly let me say what a useful topic this is and secondly I like to say that it appears that it's of no use to me even though I spent several hours yesterday following all the posts and reading various documents that those posts pointed to! :-(
Here's my problem, and my question.
I have an original 300Tdi installed in an August 1998 Defender 90 (Manual and no A/C). It's important to note that this is one of the last 300Tdi Defenders before the TD5 came out the following month.
The problem is that I seem to have a half-and-half vehicle which has more electronics than a normal Manual TDi but not as much as a TD5. So, for example I appear to have an ECU which sat under the front middle seat (it's now cable-tied to the top of the gearbox!). And, more importantly I don't have the Bosch configuration that is required for this mod :-(
If I look at wiring diagrams, Haynes Manuals etc I can't find any configuration under the bonnet that seems the same as mine. A chap who used to work for Land Rover reckons that as they were building up the TD5 production line they started adding parts to the 300Tdi that would soon be used in the TD5 but a lot of them were never utilized (this does seem strange but perhaps it's true).
Does anyone have a similar vehicle or is there anyone who could explain the weird configuration?

I suspect you have an ES auto. These were fly by wire, they apparently had an extra 5bhp to compensate for the borg Warner box. Don't know if you can fiddle about with these.
Leave well alone in opinion.
Oops I retract most of that as I realise you require talking about a 'fender.
But yes it looks like it is a fly by wire in that too.
