Hi all,

so i traced the over heating/lack of heaters to a head gasket failure, I keep reading on here and a few other forums that before you replace with a new gasket its best to get the cylinder head skimmed.

My question is, if you check for warpage yourself and its not warped, do you still need it skimmed?

I used a straight edge and a 0.08mm feeler gauge and it was within tolerance

if face is clean and not marked ie indented were fire ring sits ,and within tolerance with straight edge between middle 2 cylinders is were it should be at its worst ,your better not to skim

Thanks for the reply..any thoughts on a pressure test? the local engineering shop (that is not that local) want to slap me for 80 quid for the pressure test and skim, which I would be willing to pay, if its the right thing to do...it does seem a bit rich tho!

James is right,if the face is clean and flat then its better not to skim it.If you can clearly see where the gasket was leaking - ie the cause of the problem,then dont bother with a pressure test.If it was not clear then a test is in order.
BTW, if you realised how expensive the kit is and how much work is involved in pressure testing,(Properly) then you would think £80 is bargain.Same for skimming,except its a much quicker process.

in haynes it said that the max tolerance is 0.010mm

Just to clarify your straight edge. I hope your using a machined flat as a ruler just wont do lol it will only give you educated guess so if i was you if its anywhere near the upper tollerance bin it and get a new one.

I didn't have a machined flat, so I just used this, did the trick for me

lmao. The second head i bought lookewd good wasn't till we put a straight edge on that we found it was warped by 0.8mm in the centre. If you do get a pressure test and skim atleast you know its right. Just make sure you get the right head gasket
