I've been offered an M-reg 300tdi 90 hardtop for £4000 and wondered what you guys thought? A mate is selling it to buy a TD5, only previous owner was his grandfather who painted the chassis every year from new and it was main dealer serviced until 3 years ago.
It's red, 95,000miles, factory sunroof (watertight!!:D), factory radio, red with white hardtop, needs a new rear crossmember but the rest of the chassis is mint and so is the bulkhead. Cambelt done at 75,000, new exhaust, 2 new michelin tyres MOTd and taxed for bout 10 months. I've driven it many times and everything is tight with no bangs.
What do you guys reckon to the price?
Thanks, harry

i would jump at that mate, you know the history of it, you have driven it before and all's been good..... and only 2 owners !!!

M-reg 300tdi 90 hardtop 10 month mot for £4000 (you)
k-plate un welded with 12months mot. for £3150 (bob)
B-reg 200tdi disco engine 13 month mot 1 month tax £1900 (me)

think you might be best asking what have you payed for your 90, a 90 is worth as much as the person buying it will pay.... do you think its worth £4000 you have to drive it and be happy with it ??

Likely to need £700 spending on it...£400 for xmember and around £300 to replace original shocks and springs that will be very tired if not replaced already. What you cant buy is the fact you know its history and its a straight one. Can you see yourself wanting a 110? Is it a comercial or a CSW? Will you be happy with that? Will you be happy with the tyres or want a A/T set for another £400. If the answer is yes... then its worth what you are willing to pay for it. I would tally up what it needs to be 99% right.... say £700 for shocks etc and xmember for the next MOT and see if you can get a compromise on the price or you will be paying £4700 and thats expensive for a private sale.

Have you been smoking something? Armstrong oem dampers £12 each

my 300tdi M reg 110 with 105,000 miles cost me £2285 from a bloke in south yorkshire... not much service history, but ex leccy board, and built by landy special vehicles. came with original reinforced roof rack with integral ladders and original working PTO winch with wing top controls...

you can have that bugger for £4000 no questions! lol

seriously though, 4k sounds a bit pricey.

You are 100% correct on both counts.... but genuine LR wont be far off £300 and thats what I would look at getting knocked off if I could. He can then fit oem's for half the price :)

Ok I'm seriously considering it, but trying to work out what mines worth, 1989 (F) 90 with disco 300Tdi, Hardtop with windows, rebuilt gearbox/transfer box, new steering box, props, bulkhead replaced by me last summer, all new track rod ends, bearings, cv joints, steering guard, snorkel, new front diff, new clutch a year ago will come with mint condition defender doors and not my 2 piece ones. Mine has a bit of a shabby crossmember but all is ok.

If I keep mine it will go on a galv chassis next summer which adds another £1,350. This 90 has a mint chassis bar the rear xmember but i can buy a 3mm HD one with extensions for £200 and fit it myself. Suspension isn't a problem as i was planning on lifting mine in a few weeks and bunging some 24spline axles i've just bought on it but can always sell the axles and stick the lift kit onto this new one, what do you guys reckon i do?
