I would agree with you if I was advising someone else, if I was actually buying myself then I couldn't help but go for a ropey Defender, there seems a decent 110 for 2k for sale at the moment

If you're on a budget, and you want a Defender, then you could go for a 1980's Ninety. It's pretty much the same as a Defender, they just hadn't come up with the "Defender" badge yet.

If speed's not too much of an issue (no Defender is fast) and you want a bulletproof engine, I believe the naturally aspirated 2.5 petrol is very reliable. And they don't tend to be very expensive. Easy to work on, too.

The doors int felled oft and you know it. It's a myth and nothing more. A Freelander owner once washed his Freelander then reversed oft the drive with the door open. A wall or bollard bent the door open too far. Thats all. I'm so confident my doors won't fall oft I filmed it in a car wash.
