I've just replaced VCU and bearings with a recon one also replaced the front diff mount which was shot to bits. I am getting a severe shudder when turning right or left and accelorating. Any suggestions. I'm wondering if the rear diff mounts are shot, although they look and feel ok. Any suggestions gratefully received. Willie

Have you done a 1 wheel up test on the recon unit? They have been known to be delivery to stiff/loose.

All seems well with the VCU, prop alignment etc. The wagon runs beautifully except occasionally when turning sharp right or left in low gear and powering into the turn I get this horrible shudder from right or left depending of course which way I'm turning.

Have you got the same tyres all round with the least worn on the back? Also have you dine the one wheel up test?

I know you have just replaced the prop bearings but but this is so close to my symptoms I thought I would post.

The rubber surrounding my bearings has peeled away from the housing brackets creating gaps. The noise is the now loose rubber being slapped against the housing. Which in turn is bolted to the floor pan so it sends vibration and a horrible noise into the cabin.

Same symptoms as you - it only happens on full lock and when a bit of power is applied.

My VCU turned in a 1 wheel up test time of 35s in the cold so seems OK.

Hi WIllie,
Why did you replace the vcu and bearings ? - what were the symptoms or reasons ? (also the rear diff mount ? again, for what reason, and, where there any symptoms ?
I am just trying to get a handle on how it was before and how it is now.
Can you elaborate on the juddering please ? describe it in as much detail as possible - where on the vehicle does the juddering appear to be coming from ?
What happens if you reverse on full lock left and right - also forward left and right (low speed this time)

you also mention 'occasionally when turning sharp right or left in low gear and powering into the turn I get this horrible shudder from right or left depending of course which way I'm turning'
If you turn left - for example - does the shudder appear to come from the right OR left and visa versa for a right turn.... ?

Hi Joe H. Ireplaced the vcu bearings and the front diff mount because all 3 were shot to bits. I didn't replace the back diff mounts , they seem ok However I've got the replacements so I'll be putting them on as soon as I get a decent dry day.( Hate lying around in the wet) I am certain the shudder is from the propshaft/transmission rear end. I'll let you know if the rear diff mounts cures the thing.

But did you check that your VCU wasn't to stiff. This would cause your symptoms and cause diff bush failure.

As above,

Firstly might sound daft but are all the bolts tight on the prop/bearing carriers?

Do the one wheel up test to check how tight the new VCU is

Did you buy it with a prop fitted or have you sourced one and fitted new VCU with bearings?

Do you have the same brand and model of tyres on front and rear and if they are part worn have the ones with most tread been put on the rear?

Any issues with the IRD/rear diff? any bits of metal in the oil?

Any play in lower arms/ball joints/ top mount bushes

If that checks out ok I'd then whip the prop off and see if it still does it or not

I've completed all of the points you mentioned. The only thing I haven't done is changed the rear diff mounts. I'm going to get her up on the ramps asap and replace them, Vcu from BELL ENGINEERING bearings already fitted. Tyres are ALL TERRAIN same brand almost new all round.I'll post up if it proves to be shot rear diff mounts.

Well Nodge68, I wish I'd seen your post earlier because after a lot of trial and failure to diagnose my probs I finally got round to thinking, Maybe theres a difference in tyre diameter etc. so did the measurements and lo and behold, a 3mm difference between the front and rear despite looking exactly the same. Changed the buggers round and hey presto no more shudders. Everything done under the wagon now inc. diff mounts, propshaft UJ's, V.C.U. replaced with new bearings and she's going like a dream. Thanks everyone for the great advice .Best wishes Willie J.
