I'm after some advice from owners of series with ford essex v6's installed, i'm currently fitting one to my series 3 but would like to know what the standard series box is like with this engine, is it under geared with the standard diff's? would anyone recommend fitting range rover diff's or an overdrive with this engine? i'm still an age away from actually finishing the beast but would like to get the majority of the work done and the thing on the road again! :D

Years ago my brother ran a s111 88 with a 3 litre v6 on a range rover diff and it went great set up like that. I say a diff cause he only fitted one to the rear so had to remain in 2wd all the time, resulting in the embarrasment of being pulled out of some mud by a Rav4:eek:

If it was really muddy, even having the front wheels turning at a different speed would have helped. Must go back to 2wd as soon as you are on hard ground though.

ace, think i'll go hunting 2 x higher ratio diff's then. cheers!

anyone got any diff's?.......... :D

i used to race a series with an essex v6 years ago, with standard diffs it was ok, but that was only off road, try to use a ser 2a gearbox as they are stronger ;)

Will they fit straight out of all these early discos that are being broken now or are they different to RRC diffs?

i think its a straight swap other than making an oil filling point on the rear axle, i remember reading bout it in one of the landy mags :D

i have spent nearly £1000 on getting hold of an almost new pro rebuilt essex V6, with all the steve parker parts and...... i am too scared to fit it!
i used to build the essex engine in the past and love it, but i have got so used to my 2 1/4 diesel i would probably foul me breeches if i fitted it!
if any one wants to buy it. get in touch.
i have another essex motor in the shed as well 70k miles.

£1000! One of the reasons the V6 used to be popular in Land Rovers is you could pick them up for about twenty quid from a scarp yard.

fook me thats more than me landy is worth with me sitting in it!! for that price i hope the v6 has 3 carbs, unleaded conversion, super cam and puts out about 300bhp!! :D i'll give u fifty quids, take both those engines off yer hand, be doin you a favour like.......

i'm still waitin engine block coming back with new cam shaft bearings fitted.....

Is the series 2A considered stronger because it doesn't have syncromesh on the lower gears? Or is there more to it than that? Something about the way the main shaft is kept in place too...or am I imagining that?
