I've played with a few old engines over the years but never seen pitting like that. Must have had a hard life.

Yea, must have. Not to worry, i'm going to get a friend to bore out the engine, put new plating in (forgotten the name) and revert back to original engine size, as it's bored out +040 now i think

I have however, been practicing arc welding/stick welding/SMAW welding/bluh welding.

That's me 90 parked on a few bits of hinge bent, then welded together then welded to a bottom main piece. Also managed to get the disco parked on it!
 
Blue and off-white always looks good on a series 3 :) Although if you're doing a restoration, I think it would be good to return it to its original colour- it looks like it was a sand colour before being painted green.
 
Blue and limestone is a nice original combination but if you're not fussed about keeping original factory colour then My fav is Pastel green and limestone.
