After a long while I'm nearly back to working on the ol girl, everything is ready to go and my daily discovery is up to standard so can get going again on the series soon.
I've just taken the full gearbox into Cambridge where I did a course as a friend is going to be stripping and rebuilding it for his work experience, guided by the instructors, who know much more than me!!
I gave him new gaskets, bearings and oil seals etc. to fit as he goes and if anything else comes up I'll supply it. Will save me some time later on, and hopefully he's gonna take some piccies.
It took 2 hours worth of degreasing and pressure washing the box to get it to an acceptably clean state to work on, the bell housing was filth from the oil leaks and most crud didn't even come off with a wire brush, all those new seals should sort that out!

Little news on the gearbox, he said it took half a day just to fully drain it and in exact words...
"It smelt pretty bad, and was a horrid orange colour. The main gear box drain bung had a load of metal pieces stuck in it which could be slightly worrying", they were small bits of copper and metal plates less than 1cm, but not swarf, it probably hasn't ever been changed!! :D

"It had a slight orange, more black tbf. It was full with fluid on all of them"... Check me out ;) the fluid was more likely mushy gear parts than oil :p

Have bought another series with my old man as an investment, was a steal for he wanted for it, making space in his garage so asked if we wanted it, will give me a lot of inspiration on the olden! Tis an 81 full resto with a 300tdi conversion :)

Thanks yeah one of mine too! I was looking to paint the 72 this color eventually but will stick with Marine blue now I think! Theres no lacquer on it, so 70s look, i like that with this colour. No canvas on this one, but we're looking to get one at some point, not sure what colour though! Its got a few little quirks, NATO hitch, winch bumper that needs the radiator lip behind it, 2 seats for the Gearstick space and galv cheq plate in places, its not totally finished needs a few tiny bits doing for road use but apart from the odd road run and show its going to sit in my garage under sheet and appreciate! Sitting in the cab with the engine running sounds and feels like you're sitting in the engine bay :D

The truck cabs are noisy. You can get the bumper plates new from various suppliers. Lucky to have a garage to dry store. It'll have good value in ten years time.

What are those bumper plates then? Quick Google didn't bring much up... Might be a consideration for the future, yeah I'm moving to a bigger unit on the farm this weekend, with enough space for a 4 post ramp and storage for all 3 landys at a push! Will be interesting to see the values climb over the years, who knows what we'll do with it! Maybe even swap the 2.25 if its worth doing for value increase, in many years though!
 
Looking further into the project, ive been pondering the future of the 2.25 engine as its always had this hairline crack on the head, right at the front on the coolant port beneath the top hose mounting point

Hopefully that's visible, my fear is if I were to undo those long bolts I'd never get em back in again and it would crack right through somewhere, its not leaking but I know it'll cause trouble. Being the head that's the problem, does anyone think this is repairable to any extent or should I be looking at getting something like this

I'm not sure what the options are with it, just know I can break it..
Although that particular one has 'hotspots' etc. I'd wanna hurry up and grab it before it goes. Though I'm also conscious of the originality of my engine, but I don't have any idea what damage my current cylinder head will have underneath until I strip it. Any thoughts?

And I've nearly finished moving into the new workshop/garage, will have a ramp in there soon and plenty of space for everything I'll ever do plus storage for the series'

Fair way till its complete yet but its getting there, once I finish the niggly problems on my discovery I'll finally get that chassis welded on :)
 
Any ideas/tips on measuring the exact places to cut for the rear chassis? Hoping to get going on it next week, off laning tomorrow, I still need to learn to weld so hopefully I can get someone I know to help, but gotta cut it up first, it wouldn't be very difficult if the cross member was proper, but that's coming out too, and the replacement chassis has brackets mounting the cross member. So having to replace both X member and rear 1/2 leaves me blind with no easy guide point :confused:
