altho you have the V5 that is not proof of ownership....what if the original owner comes along and says thanks for fixing my landy

its been on my land for over 10 years so ill tell them to do one! im sure i have rights of ownership if ive stored it for that amount of time and never had any contact with the owner? the V5 has a name and address of previous owner??

V5 is registered keeper not necessarily the owner,I would want to have a recipt of purchase for the vehicle from the previous owner before i started any work or apply for a V5....

dont worry bout the previous owner

1 when you applied for the v5 the dvla will have contacted the previous owner and they wouldnt have issued it to you if the last keeper had said he wants it

2 i dunno much about inland salvage rights but i do know if youve openly had something ( anything ) on your land or in your possession for over 4 years and nobody has questioned you or said anything about it then its rightfully yours

now its time to stop guessing and start messing :D:D:D

Claiming the vehicle involves asking the previous own if they want it. Two week wait for the privilge. Also if they do come running then rent of the land costs one series. Mochuel charged me forty quid a day wen i got towed....

i brought a vespa off ebay and applied for the v5 and the next thing i knew the police phoned me and said i had brought a stolen vehicle and took the whole thing away and left me out of pocket! so the fact ive sent off for a v5 with the reg and chassis number thats in front of the gear stick (not sure if that is where its suposed to be) and they have sent me back a copy of the v5c with no queries i would guess they would of done the appropriate checks and everything has come back all good? time to start messing then :)

plus he can cut up the tree thats fallen down in front of it coz i cant even get the bloody thing out till ive got that out the way first! and the trees that have decided to take up inhabitance inches from the wheels and through the front bumper!

Bob will do that for ya.

i think yu say yu can have your car back - but it will cost you storage charges of a thousand a year, or I will have the car in lieu. and they would have to prove ownership.

Having said that, I think if it has been abandoned for a given period of time, you can claim salvage rights. I know of someone that did that on a Merc abandoned in a London car park.

if you stick to the following procedure:

Transport the vehicle to a safe place, on private land.

Inform the police that you have done so, giving your name, address and phone number, the registration number and V.I.N. of the vehicle, and the current location of the vehicle.

Contact the D.V.L.A. with the same information.

(The police and the D.V.L.A. will then attempt to find the registered keeper).

If the registered keeper cannot be traced after 30 days, you can legally apply for a V5 in your own name.

i no if council put a this will be removed in seven days ticket on the vech and dont remove it with in 7 days then its fair game to anyone made £900 quid on a cav dumped outside father in laws. plus manged to set fire to mate and garden when cutting it up lol

As far as I know when you complete the purchase of a property any goods and chattels left by the previous owner become legally yours at the moment of completion. Sometimes an issue when farms are sold ther are often large amounts of silage, straw etc. that is both valuable and difficult to move.
Like BoB says the v5 doc is not a legal proof of ownership, just that you are resposible for taxing and keeping the vehicle.
Over the years I have "found" a few unwanted cars, sadly not classic landies. Ther has never been a problem tansferring the docs, like jc1 said they just get in touch with the former keeper if they dont object the doc is transferred. Still looks a great project.Loving that split tailgate.

so wen i sent off for the v5 would the dvla of contacted the former owner? they sent me a letter saying they recieved my application, cashed the check said it will be completed by the 28th of january, if i didnt recieve or here anything within 5 working days i could contact them but on the 31st of january it arrived in the post with my name the vin reg colour etc. ill pop a letter in the post to the previous owner thats stated on the v5 doc at the bottom and see if i here anything back. im not gona be spending £100s on it in the next few weeks anyway. at the most ill start stripping a few bits down.

Yes they will have. Directgov used to have a good breakdown of the process but i cant find it on gov.com which has replaced it.tsk tsk government

is that the only V5 in circulation?does the current owner have the V5 and you have a copy?

I would want to know as it is an issue...

It could be a real good keep of a landy that you have been watching for 10 years knowing you dont own it or it could get taken away from you...or it could not...

We all think they would. Not sure what they do if they cant find him. Doesnt matter to you,you have the doc. and as I say I think you became the legal owner as it was on the property at completion, unless there are any conveyancing lawyers to tell us different!

Just to be safer than sorry I am sending the previous keeper a letter, what do you think of this?

"RE: Landrover Series 2a
Dear .....,
I am writing to you regarding a Land Rover Series 2a which has been left on land inherited by myself. This land was part of the old Braintree Motor Club and has been unused for many years.
I have recently applied for the V5 of the Land Rover as it has been left on the land for approximately 10 years+. I felt it would be morally correct to contact you prior to removing the vehicle from the land to restore as my own vehicle.
Please would you contact me in writing by 1st March 2013 to agree for me to claim ownership. Please note that if I do not receive any communication I will accept that you have agreed for this to happen.
Sincerely, ..."

after the 1st march I will crack on!
