Hi,
Recently purchased a starter motor, advertised as brand new HELLA by island of 4x4 , for my Diesel P38.
Price was 148GBP + postage 48GBP. Paid through PAYAPL.
Received it yesterday and it's clearly marked as 're-manufactured' on the motor as well as on the box.
Seller is known for his reasonably priced LR parts by most of us here. Since it was listed as brand new I did not worry about it at the time of ordering.
Informed him and claims that his supplier has not mentioned so. I don't believe him. He should be able read the labels of the products that he sells.
Today, he has removed this particular motor from his list.
Just posted for others to beware.

A lot of islands stuff is shipped directly from the manufacturer so they possibly haven't even seen the box.
However, a remanufactured unit should be the same as a new one and carry the same warranty etc.
I've got a lot of time for island, they've always been great with me. They often don't answer the phone but they always seem to answer their emails.
I know some people have had some issues with them but I don't think they've been too bad.

I had the same with an alternator from Craddocks, came in a halfords box labelled remanufactured. It looked brand new though?
Been on 4 yrs now, no issues.

I prefer a remanufactured part to a new. A reman part uses quality parts while a brand new uses cheap parts & unlikely to be used in any rebuilding process. The majority of all rotors purchased would be a reman unit.

I Replaced my bearings in my alternator recently for decent brand ones so i know its all good. At least island have removed the listing dont think you need to worry

I am disappointed as the web page said it's new. Otherwise I wouldn't have placed the order.
Similar thing happened with Rmmrs bros who sold me a set of glow plugs as OEM.
But what I received was not BERU , something else. (can't remember the brand) . When inquired they
said that's the OEM manufacturer. I just gave up.

Well whats the difference in price from a Land Rover OEM one to a re-manufactured one?

A lot of the time OEM is original equipment manufacturer specifications and not the original equipment manufacturer. You have to be so damn thorough these days.

I posted the Beru part number for glows recently. They only distribute through 2 companies in the UK. Any others and you take a risk.

MrGorsky is planning on having his starter refurbed as you just cannot get the quality now. So could be a good thing. Personally I don't use Island any more.

If you are that worried inform Paypal that it was not as described and get a refund.

Already informed. The seller wants it returned, which is another 100 GBP or so.
Not economically viable.

May be he can tell me the part nos for field coils. The starter is fine when cold but won't turn or turns slowly when hot. The electrician said need to change the field coils. Other parts seems okay.

I thought Island 4X4 did FREE P&P when you spend Over £50... so I don't get why you paid it in the first place, and also, why dont YOU send it with your own courier? it will cost £5

Haven't you been through this scenario before with a second-hand alternator? If it's not as advertised they should pay the return postage. How did you pay for it?

This thread does feel a little deja vu, and I believe the OP is from Sri Lanka.
£5 postage to there may be stretching it.
