In my experience and I am often shocked at the price difference in Land Rovers, just hang out for your price as once they have looked at a few sheds good ones will fetch more money.
When I sold my last 4x4 I asked double what people told me it was worth, first bloke came to look at it, he was a bit hesitant as he had seen a newer one in the Auto trader, I showed him where to look for rust etc, he went away and called me later once I had sold it as the newer one was a rot box mine wasn't. Its all about a good description, good photos, good write up and ideally a video

To be honest I can see where James is coming from with the price, if you look at ebay their is similar without galv chassis etc for a little less, or the ones at silly prices offered by dealers. Whether any sell is another matter.
But one can only try, I'm in a similar position to James regards to rebuild and they don't come cheap to do right, and rightly so wants as much back out of it as he can.

I think I have decided to sell mine too (well maybe) and people will probably say the same about that.
They're bloody hard things to price, but if someone can't build to the same spec for less money then it's got to be worth it to the right buyer, it's just finding someone who appreciates what you've done and wants something ready to go, and also how long it takes to find them.
Good luck with the sale James.

Cheers Aaron. I was supposed to spend today tidying up some stuff and taking some pics, but it seems to be pouring. Hopefully people will see that other than the bodywork (which has never bothered me) there is very little that needs doing to it.

Thanks for the positivity and advice :) I just want a nice sunny day so I can take it up to the farm and get some proper pics of it.

Have you tried a flat surface car parks are ideal, photograph it in the pouring rain as the reflection will make it stand out and should give you a good result

Sorry to see you selling that, or thinking of doing so...
Would some pics of the chassis help? either in situ, or during the rebuild process ??

Best of luck with it.

Much the same here and was my plan too.
To be honest when I sold my brothers td5 90 last year that was much the same, full rebuild, galv chassis etc.. but the bodywork wasn't the best.
I stuck that on ebay at £8500 or best offer, some bloke in London offered £8000 which I accepted and he got the train down, when he got here he was a pissing moaning ****, oh theirs a dent here and why's this dent here, oh and theirs a run in the paint.
I thought he might walk away, but his mate who was with him (who had a 90 himself) basically told him you wont find something on a galv chassis and as mechanically sound for the same money and that bodywork can always be sorted and is probably what swayed him to actually pay for it.

From what he told me I think he wanted something perfect or a Chelsea tractor, which it was never going to be at 16 years old, and if it was as good on top as it was underneath it wouldn't have been that cheap.

Hold out and you'll get what you want for it I'd think, at least you're in no rush. Not everyone has £10,000 sat to buy a landrover as soon as it comes up so it will probably take time to find the right buyer.
It's got me thinking what I should put mine up for when the time comes though, the last thing I want is to loose my head on it now.

Thanks. I think I am going to sell it, then I will probably do another project at some point, hopefully when I move to a house with a decent space to work.

Yes, I will do pics of the chassis at some point, it needs pressure washing first though as it is really muddy!

Yeah, very good point. To be honest I am trying to swap my car first, then I will look at getting the defender sold. I think the plan is to clean and photograph properly, tidy up a couple of things then reduce the price to £9500. Sadly it isn't a TD5 or it would be worth more. They are so hard to value!

Guess you have given up the idea of a Morocco trip then. Good luck with the sale. Will be interested to see if you miss it once you have sold it.

No, I still want to do one. I'm buying a Mitsubishi Outlander and hopefully it will be good enough offroad with a lift and big tyres to take in the sand.

That's the thing though, the very good example of tdi's seem to fetch more than td5's at times. Probably because some see the tdi as simple to repair and maintain over td5 onwards vehicles.
In hindsight £8,000 probably wasn't enough, or not now it would seem.
Do as you say and clean it and tart any niggly little bits up and get some good photo's, it will sell and their are people/enthusiasts out their that will pay it, I'd doubt your average person is who it's aimed at who wants a 'defender' as cheap as possible to go 'off-roading'
I must sit down with a pen and pad of paper one day soon and work out what mine has really cost me.

I'm not going to do that, or I think I am going to find that I have spent more than the £9k I have estimated to have spent!

How you getting on? Anyone looked at it yet?
Nope, someone was coming this weekend but decided it was too expeditiony for them.
It passed its MOT with just advisories for missing its brake disc shields (which I have somewhere) and a leaking ball joint seal (STILL, even after an axle rebuild!). Not in much of a rush, still havent decuded if i actually want to sell it...

Have you had much interest at all James?
A few seem to be coming up at this price and surprised it hasn't gone yet.

Nope, none at all. Well, one guy who wanted a CSW and ebay had lost the pictures again...

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Hi,

I'm looking for a 90 at present and almost certainly prices are being overly inflated. I think its now getting to the point that people who are genuinely interested and know what they want are just waiting it out until the current frenzy is over and things settle down.

Ebay seems to be the worst for this - Gumtree and Preloved prices are a little more realistic.

Purely speaking as someone actively looking to buy (even though yours would be out of my league anyway!) I think the price is certainly putting people off. You may get more joy putting on a reserve and opening up bidding a little lower to get things moving, rather than going the classified route.

Hope you don't mind the twopenneth.

Cheers

I have no idea mate. My thoughts at the moment are, people want something shiny, a Chelsea tractor, show pony or what ever you want to call them, and likely ****'e underneath, as opposed too something mechanically sound, solid or new chassis and slightly untidy bodywork which isn't a major to sort.
I stuck mine on ebay, buy it now or best offer, and not even a sniff really, not even any silly offers which I expected.
I need to take some better pictures, I know it's easy to say about your own vehicle but they really didn't do it justice, my description isn't great either, I'm not very good at putting stuff into words, so I will give that a re-jig too and try again on a classified ad I think.
