Left work at 5:00 and at an M-way junction the Disco stuttered/lurched abit. I thought it might be the torque converter as the past couple of days on the M27 it wouldn't lock up. Any way, five miles later it lurched and stopped in the middle of the A27.

Feck!!!

Put in a gallon of diesel, hooked up swmbo's Avensis. Loads of spinning but absolutely no attempt to fire up.

Breakdown Company called. Lots of poking and proding - no joy. Plenty of turning but still no starting. Just been recovered home and got back at 10:00. Five hours to do seven miles.

The plan is to get it lifted to my garage tomorrow. Before I leave my mechanic to explore - is there anything obvious to check? I'm off to bed to warm up so I'll catch you guys tomorrow.

Thanks in advance. :D:D

Diesel or petrol ?

and did you run it right out of fuel ?

Might need LOTS of bleeding out ...

Mine failed to start today, 3rd time, this time it didnt fix itself before i could check what was wrong and the fuel stop solenoid is getting volts but not enough power to make it work. This could be your problem, either the solenoid is not working or power not getting to it easy check is to hot wire it and see if it wlill start .....this assumes you have a diesel....

You can also remove the solenoid and replace it without the spring but ive not tried that myself, if you try that you have to stall it to get the engine to stop.

he says he put diesel in it so i suspect its a diesel,

How do you stall an auto?

That happened to mine - turned out to be the lift pump.

fuel pump

is it getting fuel :p ?
The patrol man didn't seem too bothered about finding out but I guess the answer is no although he did prime it with the rubber knobby jobby on the filter without any joy.

Diesel and not out of fuel.

Timing belt?
Only time will tell.

Interesting. It's gone to the garage so I'll send him a copy of this thread. :D

It's easy, just wait until you are on a single carriageway road with a central reservation then it stalls on its own, completely blocking the road.:eek::eek:

How much did a replacement cost? :)

fuel pump
How much did a replacement cost? :)

Not wanting to sound thick (oops, too late), what's the difference between a lift pump and a fuel pump?

delphi lift pump about £25 on ebay when I last looked.

try locking an auto in a high gear and driving slowly at a steep hill. easy peasy to stall

U don't drive an automatic do you. :(

Perhaps you can tell me how to lock an automatic gearbox in a high gear?

Also without a bit of throttle on a steep hill an automatic is not going to move but still the engine won't stall and just stay at tick over.

Without going off topic too much. I've seen a few autos stall at rtv's,all of them on a steep climb going slowly. Hope you get it sorted,Im surprised its gone wrong. How many miles have you done since the new lump was fitted?

If the idle speed is incorrect ( to low) the engine will stall, that must say something about the state of the vehicles at rtv,s.

Can you post a photo of the drivers side of your engine? Seeing as how the TGV is a beefed up 300tdi I'd expect the lift pump to be the same.

Found a pic on your build thread. Lift pump looks the same as a standard one. It shouldn't have failed after 6k miles but its less than 5 minute job to swap. I didn't even have to bleed my fuel system when I did mine.
