I'm thinking about taking the plunge and replacing the engine in my P38. It's currently the 4.6 V8 and - touch wood - isn't presenting any significant problems at the moment. I'd like to plan a replacement rather waiting for catastrophe. Is anyone able to recommend an excellent replacement engine?
 
Go for a top hat linered engine, or at least the block. Just sorting one out myself as my LR replacement engine has slipped a liner.
Turners, ACR, V8 developments are good places to start. Don't get ripped off by RPI.
 
I've often wondered the same thing, although I'd require a diesel unit. Fingers crossed and all that but you never know.

Someone's going to suggest putting V8 in it ...

The benefits of fitting a new engine costing thousands in a car worth hundreds are not to me apparently visible. :p:D:D

Depends how much you like the rest of the car. Each to their own. Not everyone runs a P38 because they are cheap to buy:rolleyes:

I knew someone would suggest a V8! Maybe a Chevvy 6.2 from a Monaro?

When I said new I didn't mean pristine new. Any M51s going have probably seen better days by now. I think some people have put the Isuzu 3500 diesel in?
 
Probably true. If only the BECM etc holds up it could be a winner. A new engine would be thousands though, surely?
It would seem you can pick up such an engine for a lot less than fixing a RR V8, no electronics either and economical judging by other threads.
 
It's not as easy just fitting any engine,electronics have to talk to each other,bell housing adaptor made up ,will the gearbox ,props,diffs,half shafts ,cv joints,all hold up to the extra torque,so much easier just repairing what's in there,will be cheaper in the long run,

ZF4HP24 would be OK, the engine is not that powerful, no electronics on the engine, rest is mechanical & not too hard.
Fitting an M51 would be very easy:rolleyes:
