would the air springs cope.
they did do a daf with auto box its the bloody electrics

The best ever engine made that fits on to the zf gearbox and fitted to many RR and LR is the very smooth and powerful Mazda 3.5 slt.
M&D fitted these engines and can still supply the fitting kit.

If I was to re-engine the P38, I would look at the Transit engine, it's smoother than the M51, can be a lot more powerful and the adaptors are already available I believe to mate it to the ZF autobox.

A transit engine would be last on my list,I've seen a few with the cam lobes spinning on cam(just pressed on) then valves hit and bursts the cam box, cylinder head and cam box are line bored and have to be replaced as a pair,£££££££££££.

Mine's on 165K miles and it's never had an engine problem:D

Iveco 3 litre van engine. Went into the Iveco Massif ( Santana ).
Should work a treat.
Still, its probably cheaper to buy another P38. Even better still that the broken down one can be sold for spares.
If theres nothing wrong with the one you've got, why worry ?

For Christ sake just get the one you have running correctly and service and maintain it well.

A couple of months ago, the Defender I was driving 61 plate 172k fully serviced from new, just let go in stationary traffic (what else) on the '25. Had 2.25 tonne genny on the rear, managed to get it across two live lanes to shoulder by using starter motor and second in low range. The fact that it had no compression certainly helped. It happened with absolutely no warning and had to be fitted with a new mill.

It just got carted off to the dealer network so I don't know exactly what failed but it was like the cambelt broke (except it doesn't have one).:eek:

Good grief!

3 pages suggesting diesel & transit engines:eek::eek:
Just put in a top hat block, maybe a cam upgrade & your 4.6 will remain the right engine for powering the P38 RR.

And personally, I wouldn't touch anything with a non standard engine bodged into it - nobody would buy a Passat with a Hyundai engine in it.

At a stroke the vehicle has lost its provenance and its residual value.

It's amusing reading talk of changing engines, when most don't know how to properly maintain the one they have. Bit like discussing the merits of different recipes and not knowing how to turn the bloody oven on. :D:D:D
