Not a good day today
had it out for a fast test drive and a sudden clattery noise, pulled off A road onto verge and had a look under , oil everywhere initially I thought the oil switch had blown then noticed the speedo cable had wrapped round the front prop, shredded the prop gaitor, it had pulled cable out of dash and when thrashing round cut through the oil pressure gauge capillary pipe losing a lot of oil, all over in about 20 secs , hopefully no serious damage done

Repaired at roadside , topped up with oil and got home sounded ok .

New front prop rubber gaitor fitted
New speedo cable fitted at weekend temp routing until it’s a bit warmer
Soldered the fuel tank leads together which had been cut through
Front to rear brake pipe been rubbed and pulled this works but needs changing
Took it for a test run and goes well then noticed a split fuel leak off pipe squirting diesel when it revs lucky had some spare and fitted thought they were supposed to be low pressure!
Need to sort the pipe to oil gauge the ferrule insert seems hard to get in the small bore plastic pipe

I’ve been working on the passenger side military type under seat fuel tank last couple of weeks
It had a huge leak out of bottom seam new ones insane prices compared to Drivers side
I used the POR. 15 system , the hardest bit was cleaning all the old diesel stains out to leave a clean surface , after a variety of degreasers , jet wash Hand scubbing got the POR sealer in on Sunday , leave it to dry for 96 hours , I’m going to fill it tomorrow see how it goes , if it still leaks I’ll bro the outside,

I fitted it with a couple of rubber washers , Previous to that it was just bolted up , perhaps the seams get a bigger shock without the dampening, the paint seems quite hard bit like hammerite , time will tell

Filled up with 30 litres and it’s dripping  out of seam ,a lot less than before managed to siphon it all out and put it in the main tank
Have to take it off and clean outside and inspect further

I split the bottom cover off tank this morning, I think the seams look ok but can see pinholes in the most rusty bits
Not a large area but possible fibreglass repair , there is polyester and exoxy resin and apparently one works better than others
Anyone had experience of a repair like this

I cleaned up bottom of tank and chiselled off the raised solder bits and wire brushed them flattish
You can see where the diesel is seeping through the holes
I used marine degreaser and por15 metal prep
3 packs of epoxy putty over the pin holes and sanded down
Cleaned up bottom cover used the POR15 stuff again and sprayed with galvanised paint and smooth hammerite
I used some west system epoxy resin and some 300/600. Combination fibreglass Matt

Just read this thread.
Well done. Got the same to do with a series 3 and a 200tdi
Reading this makes me think i better not put off any longer and get on with it.

Starts quicker, leaks no oil so engine and drive cleaner, runs without smoke keeps mot man happy, I’ve put sound matting in so noise not an issue , it seems to pull up hills easier and more responsive at lower revs, I do need to do a road test to compare properly

Other Di conversions reporters are well impressed with performance but I may need to tweak the pump settings a tad
Top speed similar as kept same gearing / diffs so restricted by max revs.
Changing oil filter will be better as will bleeding injector pump

I have been brush painting some of the panels over last couple of month, torn between leaving original old paint and putting on new, so decided to paint panels that had been affected by ally corrosion which is pretty much all apart from rear!
I have just fitted a new Denso radiator to replace the old one which was losing some of its fins , also got a 14” Kenlowe fan which just installed this morning. I needed to fit two 8mm nutserts into front crossmember to secure bottom bracket made from dexion, the top bracket used the original rad holes ii front panel.
I need to secure the dangly front light wiring and sort a switch and relay for fan , there’s no power label on fan or box so not quite sure how many amps , but wires not that big.

It’s worse than I thought, no leaks or overheating but I noticed little bits of chaff on my nice clean engine after weeks of wondering where it come from realised it was the fins getting blown through
So now I can jet wash it a bit and clean it up:)
