do yourself a favour & buy a decent car ! Landrover customer service appalling ! Dealers incapable of fixing when they go wrong !FR2's are a money pit ! with a capital P , They are horrendously thirsty by modern day standards & they ain't built to last !
I have a low mileage one that I have owned from new & its been the worst car I have ever owned in 35 + years. The faults fill 6 whole pages of A4 paper . As an example its had 4 dashes, power steering rack, Pump, turbo an air-con pump, 4 fan speed controllers wiring harness, no end of electrical problems with windows dash, warning modules etc, reduced power & starting issues ! wiper mechanmsim & motor, steering column, sensors, imobilizer issues,EGR valve, replacement tow bar, seized rear brakes, these are just a few of the issues when it was less than three years old. !& less than 14000 miles ! Oh and to really top the lot a defective auto gearbox that was never diagnosed by any main dealers whilst under warranty ! ( it was always pulling away in 2nd gear !) this caused severe hesitation and flat spot as it struggled on hills to get moving , so now I'm left with one that the box is most likely shot as well. L/Rovers best offer was an extra 2k of a brand new one ! why the hell when its been a piece of junk would I want to buy another piece of carp & pay 17k to upgrade when mine had done less than 20K in three years & paid nearly 30k for the first one.
I hate mine, it makes me sick every-time I look at it with the stress it has caused ! including breaking down 3 times in 3 years whilst on holiday in France causing even more stress.
Landrover should be ashamed of themselves ! Oh I I still have a really noisy rear axle that when driving abroad once it gets to 470 miles it howls so loud you cant hear yourself talk in the car & this has never been fixed as it doesn't make the noise when it goes to the dealer ! The first time the noise started was 2 weeks old and 1470 miles old & had to live with it since !so that will be the next failure !
Do not buy these pieces of junk they are appalling !

Why hijack a thread about colour for this tirade?

Have the doors fallen orf? Just wondering.

I’ve been looking at Freelander 2’s as one day my Freelander 1 could possibly fail with a problem which is either not worth the money to repair, or too daft to fix. I went on a free LR experience day. I like the Freelander 2. Previously been on a D4 one too. Freelander 2’s seem very expensive even second hand. I think that’s due to demand. Have noticed a number of D3 owners by me who have replaced their D3 with a Freelander 2. Mentioned this on the experience day and we agreed it’s down to running costs. Hopefully the Evoque launch may free up more Freelanders in the second hand market. I either buy a late Freelander 1 td4 auto or a Freelander 2 auto. Like the spec of the XS. Would be nice to have new. Would be nice to have the more powerful engine SD4 version. But me thinks buying one 2 or 3 years old with a printout of the work done to it may be the better way to buy.

I suppose you can buy good and bad ones. LR has a long list of faults with all designs. All manufacturers do these days. It’s a case of them appearing under warranty or not, which is the biggest concern. It looks to me as if the Freelander 2 has been set higher in the market place. Hence owners are expected to be able to afford higher prices for repairs etc. Have to admit my 2001 v6 has taken a lot of money off me in 7 years, for servicing and repairs. Includes a recon auto too.

All owner experience is good. It’s nice to hear of both sides. I’ve had crap service from a main dealer too. LR were on the phone the other day checking up on me as I’m a prime target for a sale. :pound:

Does anyone have wire cutters, false plates and a trailer?

Was it a red one? Perhaps black ones are really better.
Yer but no but black is boring. Bit like white, silver and grey. We should have betterer colours like red, blue and green. Colours with colour in them, rather than colours without colour. But I still likes red and blue. ;)

No one has seen a nice Evoque.....

FL2 are the most reliable cars LR has ever launched!

Now go argue :)

hi hippo
yes your right about the freelander 2 and evoques going down the same production line at hailwood. Worked on both the freelander 2 in 2005/2006 and on the new evoque 2011 at hailwood. Worked on new product introduction on both Freelander 2 and Evoque. When i left last september it was a 3 to 1 ratio evoque to freelander. :D
Thanks.

:) converted in 2007 85,000 miles later just passed its mot no faults
runs fine and only 69p a ltr
CLEAN & GREEN

I have to agree with Hippo's points here:

My local main dealer keeps contacting me as I've bought 2 new vehicles from them in 10 years - the last one in 2004

I only bought my current FL facelift as they came up with a spec which I couldn't have before unless I ordered a Swedish market model for export.

I too have been on (several) free LR Experience days and although I'm impressed with the capability of the FL2 I'm not prepared to lay out that amount of money for one.

I'm going to hang on to my present 05 MY for as long as possible, as I've got it 'sorted' just how I like it.

The fact it coming up to 8 years old and isn't a current model doesn't interest me at all.

Singvogel.

????? Lets face it. Sometimes on LZ we attract psychologically deranged monsters

Maybe in this case we should involve the trading standards.....

Nothing that starts with FL - should be referred to as "the most reliable ....."

After all

If ti is reliable

It ain't a true landy!

I love how the Disco1 owners come onto the Freelander forum with their rose tinted glasses and forget about the insane amount of recalls done onto Discovery 1.

Compared to the D1, the FL2 has suffered from a tiny tiny amount of issues.

Most common issues with FL2 are rear diff pinion bearing and PAS res gauze, few radio software issues, bout it really.

Who in thier right mind would buy a new model Landrover....the evoque is based on a Freelander 2which has had problems with power steering , rear diffs, wrong programming for auoboxes and interior fans to name just a few.......but hey victorioa beckham helped to design it....I've driven a few but alough they are nice ill wait until the freelander2 is facelifted and most of the faults have been sorted out before spending my hard earned.
I like my Freelander it does more than I ask of it and it's old enough now that the price of parts are coming down because the patents have now run out......and 80% of problems can be sorted out on your drive.

FL2 is hydraulic PAS, Evoque is Electronic PAS.

rear diffs,.

Was only a bearing race issue fixed at VIN Range:257090, so is a non-issue on a new vehicle.

I've never seen a record auto box programming being a known issue as interior fan programming?

I think Evoques are horrible to drive..... You cant see anything, the wingmirrors looks horrible ,the ride is harsh even without magnaride enabled, the roadnoise is terrible and there is less interior space than a Micra.

I will agree your less likely to have an issue with a FL1 Td4 as any manufacturing defects are likely to have been ironed out and that the BMW Td4 Engine's reliability reminds me of that of a 2/300 Tdi.

Although in production state i think the FL2 has been the most reliable product so far :)

In comparion to a Freelander, they are horribly compromised. But, in comparison to what most of the new customers who would buy one would otherwise choose, they are probably a great improvement.

I used to be into BMW MINI's and I see it as a much more spacious, practical and desirable MINI alternative for the fashion conscious, rather than a second rate Freelander.

oldgeezer,

have you at any point considered rejecting the vehicle as not fit for purpose and returning it to the dealer for a full refund, in line with your statutory rights as a purchaser ? Don't think I would have got past the 1st page of faults before rejecting it.

As for the auto pulling away in 2nd all the time, I think the FL1 does that any way unless 1st is called for by command shift or sport mode. Are you sure the FL2 doesn't have the same feature ?

Wish you luck with your quest though.
