The vehicle decides if it is required to pull away in first or second by the initial throttle input of the driver.

Push the pedal to kickdown and you'll get first.

Gently accellerate, you'll get second.
 
There’s a number of recalls on the Freelander 2 relating to the automatic gearbox. Some request replacement of the auto and others require reconfiguration/recalibration.

My Freelander 1 always pulls away in first unless I stop on a hill. When test driving a Freelander 2 SD4 recently we checked this out as I was told Freelander 2 owners think the auto is harsh. Gear change is betterer than mine. We counted the gear changes and it was happily pulling away in first. Even when feathering it. Both change to second after about 2m of travel unless flooring it.

More recalls on purple ones than red/blue ones.

The second is a Quarantine notice and so is free of charge and you will have be notified about it if you car is applicable and registered at a Dealership. It is also just a download and an old one at that (couple of years old).
