is there any difference in getting a recond unit from Bell and getting a new one from evil bay ?

recon is £200 and new with GKN bearings is £380ish?

You'll get a 'real' VCU from Bell. Pot luck with eBay.
Not technically true. Only GKN knows the correct match of fluid and amount inside. You can only buy a "real" one new. All re-conners have guessed and none of them agree.

Okay, fair point, well made.

It does seem that Bell can be relied upon though. Not so sure about some of the traders on eBay.

Mmmmmm we didn't guess!! We rebuilt and tested many many times until they behaved the same.

no idea if IRD still works but i defintately drives better now, 200 for the VCU, 30 for both bearings and 15 postage (collection and delivery included) so 245 all in and 14 days to return your old vcu, or 70 surplus charge

can anyone help me I have a 2.0 td4 with a seized viscous coupling and I would like to overhaul the unit myself.
I have sourced the silicone fluid just wondering if anyone hade done this before to guide me in the wright direction many thanks
Daniel

There are a couple of threads on here where people have rebuilt VCUs themselves, if you search, you should find them.

How did you know which silicone fluid spec to use?

You'll either need some fancy metal cutting & welding experience, or quite a bit of time and effort clearing out the old (basically) solidified c**p through peep holes. Then you've got plenty of ways it can go wrong that'll probably take a bit of trial and error to sort out.

They're not hugely expensive, so its is a job you take on because you "want to do it".

My fluid wasn't solid when my old vcu failed. I drilled a hole in the side at the top. I kept the hole at the top and the fuild started to ooze out by itself. Not all, but far more than eggspected.

Yer can't beat the satisfaction of lying under yer heap in the deepest of winter, freezing yer fingers oft until they hurt, struggling to fit yer own props/vcu. If yer haven't done it yer int lived. :p

Had mine done Tuesday, thanks Austen for fitting me in during your holiday's. Done 1000 miles the hippo seems run with less drag..... and reversing better. £320 all in including new bearings bargain.
