Why don't you tell us what you've done so far to try and fix it?

I also assume the dash is showing the correct numbers and letterswhen you move the H-gate from P to 1?

Things to check:

  • Transfer box ECU under passenger seat, open it up and check for burning. (Page 586 of the RAVE workshop manual)
  • While you have the ECU disconnected use a multimeter on the correct pins for the motor position switch pins which tell the ECU where the motor is currently at. This information is on page 581, you need to probe each "Motor Position X" pin and "Motor Encoder Earth" to check for an open or closed circuit and refer to the table on page 579 which will tell you where it thinks motor currently is.
Then let us know the results of that.

You had this sorted mid September, remember?

Make it a bit easier for those there want to help, 1 thread about same problem:D

latest update !!!!!!!! well went up to EMMOTTS OF COLNE yesterday , had a great time and after explain my dilemma with the hi/low ratio problem , the new comedy group i.e. the 3 Js == joe the owner -jack alias willie joes son --and finally john the granddad of the trio ,there only available for wensday bookings !!!!!! ho ho ho , well they set about sorting it and end result after quite some considerable time, brews, and basically takin the **** outta me cos I own a range rover ???????? I love my v8 beastie the nasty barstewards !!!!!!! they sorted it big style basically the transfer ecu wasn't talkin to the becm !!!!!!! so at least now we know the answer , so a big thank-you to the comedy group p.s. don't ask why jacks nickname is willie ? ho ho ho, anyway big joe connects to his diagnostics and sets about clearing and rectifying faults , first the air con. outcome replaced air dryer re-gassed job done ,nice one !!!!! then sorts the rest of the other bits and bobs ....end result all sorted my v8 beastie is very very happy now ,just to sort trims out on lpg and that's it , fingers crossed cos have had a stressfull 8 weeks now ,,,anyway anybody struggling with their motor then do youself a favour and book it in with joe ,,not only do you get a great welcome and great service ,you get great **** takin absolutely free ,, and best of all your wallet doesn't get too hammered ... so get up there but don't order the soup !!!!!!!!! great family firm and always a pleasure to deal with , a top very knowledgeable set up in the north west ..a massive thanks to my friend stopover in i.o.m . for his invaluable imput cheers matey ..ok sorry for dragin on a bit but thought you would want to know , thanks to everyone who gave imput and to joe and his crew once again kind regards MOZZ

As was said before, it will be the transfer box ECU or the shift motor. Can you select low range and does it go into low range?

ok ok right firstly it is a continued problem we thought had been sorted and yes I have covered it before as bruim quite rightly puts it ,any way this is the status as we speak , the problem I have is that after the hi/low ratio transfer box was swapped in isle of man it is continually showing "select manual" on dash and the letters on the h box i.e. P-----1 ARE FLASHING CONTINUALLY WICH IS NEXT TO THE GEARSTICK ,,,,,,,now everything else has been checked becm Done.- ecus Done .-all connectors inside and outside Done.- operating hi to low to hi all working Done .-ALL wiring checked for breaks and damp Done .-so now im thinking backwards "no" don't anyone go there ha ha ha !!!!!! when we took the stuck transfer box off and when trying to re-fit thinking this is plug n play, it wouldn't go together so the female part had to be turned using a spanner till it married up together ,,it eventually did and all tightened u and connected ,,road tested etc but then the messages and flashing lights started when I got back to mainland a couple of days later ,,,so latest update is !!!!!! it seems the proximity settings are wrong !!!!!!!!! so how?????????? do I sort this ?????????? many thanks for your imput to date and snyde wit ,, ho ho ho kind regards mozz

as an add on can anybody tell me the correct name of the thing and the part no in case I need to buy one ,,,kind regards ,mozz

Here you go Mozz....picture attached.

The setting and checking of the Shift Motor is covered in RAVE if I remember correctly...I'll take a look in a moment...

OK Having a read in RAVE - the Transfer Box ECU is given the Main Gearbox Neutral signal from the Neutral/Park switch X308 or X293 (depending on which bit you read!) on the Main Gearbox before it will allow the Transfer Box to change Ratios.

What the SELECT NEUTRAL message means is the Driver has attempted to change Ratio before the Main GB is in Neutral, and you need to select Neutral before the Ratio Changes.

In your case, from what I can gather, is the Transfer Box 'Thinks' it has been asked to change Ratio or it 'Thinks' it is in the middle of a ratio change and that the main GB is in a drive gear.

This could be down to the Transfer Box Shift Motor switches being wrong and it thinks it is inbetween Ratios when it isn't or, the Neutral/Park Switch on the Main Box is a bit dicky.

I attach the switch logic for the Transfer Box Shift Motor. Using a Multimeter and the Shift Motor wiring plug disconnected pu the meter onto 'Continuity' setting and put one probe into pin no.5

Now using the other probe, check for continuity on the 4 other pins and note down which colour is either open circuit or closed circuit.

Then looking at the table, it will tell you where the shift motor switch pack currently thinks the shift motor is currently sitting.

A next check would be to remove the shift motor and manual turn the motor shaft while checking the switches to make sure they switch at the correct times depending on shaft position.

Next check would be the Neutral/Park switch, or the wiring from it to the Transfer Box ECU as it could be accidently grounded out, giving the Transfer Box a signal that it is not in Neutral when it actually is, thus making the Transfer Box think it shouldn't change Ratio....

My bet is on the Transfer Shift Motor Switch pack personally.

why wouldnt you turn shaft poking out of box to realign

hi sainty , mmmmmm very good "BUT" I think if you look at page 587 in rave its called "RATIO CONTROL MOTOR" and on page 581-584 it shows the tables and the settings but my question is,,, as we have moved the female part fitted to gearbox , to enable the spindle to line up with the male part , this is obviously out of sync as per the paremeters or proximity settings and then in due sending wrong info to ecu etc then dash message and flashing lights so "I" think if I manually turn the spindle back ??????????? and manage to connect it all up ???????? will the message and lights disappear ??????? what you think now sainty ????????????? I fink the others ave give up ho ho ho either that or me and you have superior knowledge in how to read rave ??????????????????? ho ho ho !!!!!!! ceers sainty mozz

Also wondered a bit over that one, who knows what position transfer box is actually in?

NOW were getting there slowly ,,, my thoughts exactly if I strip it down again how do I get it back to original position and also bearing in mind the control motor on it now is the one swapped in i.o.m. so my original is over there ,but nonetheless how do I set it myself without any testers etc as if I bought a new one ??????????
p.s. all ecus etc tested and working by emmotts .. cheers al ,, I will get this resolved one way or tother its just a question of wether I set fire to it first kind regards mozz

it wont ,but it will show you where each position should be,personally id just fit another second hand motor

oh right then so il'l do that and will still be exactly in the position im in now cos what appens if spindle doesn't line up as per before which has been the whole point of the thread ????????????? :5bbeatdeadhorse5::crazy_driver::crazy_driver::crazy_driver:
