Great pics mate and the thing I’ve found with the D3 the parts are very HD

Indeed @Nodge68 is the man ref the axle , sorry I can’t help as I’ve never had to do one and know nodge is the guru when it comes to these and very knowledgeable

Have u had to buy many more tools , know I had to buy quite a few more HD tools

Not really mate, I've just built up a decent amount over the years. Halfords advanced sets are good, I havnt broke anything yet but mate has and it's lifetime guarantee on em, they replace anything good as gold.

Any tips for upper control arms then?;) looks tight :(

Also use the Halfords advanced and been happy for what I need them for , have bought some far bigger breaker bars though

When u do the upper arms, make sure u put the vehicle into off road height and pull the battery , otherwise suspension will and does move , as u mustn’t ever remove the height sensors with the battery still connected

Try and spray the bolts with plus gas, wd40 is useless , a week before every day , to try and give u the best chance of the bolts coming undone , if they don’t its a recip saw and plenty of patience to slowly chomp ur way through them

Indeed found it easier just cutting straight through th entire wishbone next as possible to the bolts to give u better access , use foil so can wrap it around areas if ur using an angle grinder , also have some water near u just in case something gets really hot and don’t forget safety glasses

Some take the plastic liner out for better access, the upper bolts however should come out ok, as there away from all the crap , hopefully I don’t eat my words, lol

I’ll try and find some more info for u ref the front uppers

Ps, bet ur pleased u haven’t got the armoured wishbones as I’ve heard they are 10 x times worse

It's unusual for the offside to have worn, as the long shaft is supported on 2 bearings. Normally it's the nearside that wears, as just one bearing is taking the crown wheel loadings and driveshaft loadings too.


Has anyone got a part number for that bearing and do i just pull it with one of those universal puller

I've actually got that bearing, if you don't want to buy a complete kit?

I use a universal bearings puller to do them.;)

Well I'm halfway there with getting diff out lol, it's in off road height and fuse 26 pulled but will lift battery before I take sensors off control arms. Ball joints and drop links are undone. It is literally just the 2 bolts to do each side but am being cautious as it's always when you think you're done you get bitten ;)

Soaked in plusgas last 2 days, hope its enough
Drivers side does look a bit shìtty and seized :eek:

Haven't even ordered new parts yet, reckoned it all up from eBay and advanced factors

Less than £300, not bad. Do need to source bearing yet. Garage (rightly and fairly) wanted £370 to replace diff. That was just labour, I would have had to source a used diff for another £250+ :eek:

Good job I don't mind having a go!

Hmm, something might be awry then, where's the 2nd bearing mate is it in the extension tube? Mine's a manual if that makes any difference?

That's just the splined collar for driveshaft in last pic isn't it? Sorry about all this but this is furthest I've dug into a car!

I've actually found a few suppliers using your part numbers mate so I should be ok unless you wanna get rid of it :D

Previous owner said it had had a 'new' diff. New to the car or this one rebuilt more likely. I wonder if they left a bearing out if I am missing one?

Nodge, number 13 in that diagram, is that the shim I need to watch for when I tap the outer race out?

I don't need the driveshaft oil seal for the side I'm doing do i

Looks like us D3 owners are become specialists at certain jobs , I keep getting suspension questions , lol

Might be because I had to tear virtually my entire suspension apart to find faults and sort out bodges from previous owners

Look forward to the progress and think like all of us enjoy threads like this

Hope all goes to plan and wondering how do u get that bearing deep inside the tube out plse

Ur very welcome , now there’s a thought Sir Axle, snigger

I done a few pics here and there, not really a full thread per say

But think like everything when u do a job it’s amazing the knowledge u pick up without realising , also the little things that they don’t tell in workshop manuals, that tool that makes it easier etc , inc the things in what not to do, lol

Thinks there’s around 6-8 of us now that own D3s so the knowledge base is increasing as we all have our own section of knowledge on a certain subject, so when one is unsure it’s a great forum where we always help each other

I replace both diff carrier bearings on them, as a matter of course.

So 1 each side is correct? And are they identical bearings mate just for clarity?
