Hi

Only just got my p38 4.0 started after sitting for three months with an emobiliser problem, she's started the past 5 days and had over 12 volts on the battery each day but this afternoon there was under 6 volts, all the lights were dimmed and the tailgate wouldn't open. Is it safe to trickle charge the battery in the car? My chargers specifications

Trickle charge rate 3 amps RMS (2 amps DC) and fast charge rate 12 amps RMS (8 amps DC).
Automatically switches to float charge when battery is fully charged. Mains on LED indicator. Analogue meter showing battery charge

I've not got a great understanding of the electrical side of things so any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

RMS = Root Mean Squared and is applied to AC measurements. If the output has an AC component, many cheap chargers do, I would not put it anywhere near a P38.

My advice would be to remove the battery and charge in indoors - then there's nothing to worry about. The absolute last thing you need is for an ECU to freak out from a power surge or something. Follow handbook battery removal instructions :)

Use a CTEK

I have hard wired a 'flying lead' to the battery. It lives 'pluged in' when at home so always ready to go.

No problems with low volts.

As I said on another thread, I've had the Lidl £12.99 (now £14.99) smart charger on my 'scope - lovely clean power - as clean as my Ctek and cleaner than my heavy duty SIP. On sale again from this Thursday.
