Do you have to pull the engine to get the crankshaft out, the rover ran out of oil, and didn't tell me. So it has a knock now, any special tricks? It's a 1996 P38.

I guess it might if you took the transmission/tb off and removed the flywheel, front pllys, timing stuff - but that in itself would be quite a job! I suspect suspension would have to be on high to provide enough clearance. Main bearing caps have to go back exactly as fitted, main bearings must be replaced if disturbed. Wear a hard hat - cranks are heavy! :D Crank thrust clearance would probably have to be reset if the main journals have been ground.

Given the amount of work you have to do to get to the crank surely it would be easier to hire a crane and remove the lump altogether? Take the sump off and take a look at the big ends - if you're lucky maybe just a big-end shell has been damaged? Unlikely I know, but possible. During an oil starvation situation, the big-ends will usually go way before the mains are damaged to the point of journal damage.

Okay I'll just pull the engine tomorrow, is their anything special about pulling a Rovers engine? I'm used to American cars.

only concern is that con rods and caps arent marked so need to be kept together or marked ,if big ends are worn so will mains be
