Comes to something when your transfer box leaks so badly that you put a drip tray down on the mother in laws drive to Dave a puddle in the morning.

Longest run out since being back on the road, 170 miles without missing a beat :)

Nervous I was, but I got AA membership :D

Dass a big bukkitt
It's actually my recovery rope & tow strop bucket, had to improvise as it was already late when we got here lol

What says you Mr @The Mad Hat Man ? Ashcrofts for a 1.4:1 rebuilt box? Or I do already have a good Disco 1.2:1 box that I could put new O rings, output seals and bearings in and swap it out? Can't carry on like this, it's worse now than it's ever been.

Hi dieseldog69. I'm glad that your able to put some miles on your Discovery. Sorry to hear about your transfer box leaking, hope you can get new seals put in and keep going.

Yes Kiwi Jim, money was a bit tight then. I can send you a fiver though lol. Can you still get a pint over there for a fiver? You'll need a few after all that welding. Good luck with you're boot repair

For all practical purposes, yep glued - with what passed for seam sealer back in the day .... actually there are some spot welds in there too - but if yours is anything like either of ours, they are long gone  - I've fully welded the seam - so it ain't coming apart - :p to LR and their spot welds ;)
Thanks for the heads up.
Landrover's spot welds, in my experience, are just good enough to tear the wrong piece of metal, the one you would rather have had left intact.

If you need to, a spot weld drill is fine, if used with cutting fluid/ oil.

Is it front or rear seals that have gone?

I believe it is easy in situ.

I did the output shaft seals on this Transfer box a little while ago, documented the front as I did the bearing at the same time but the rear bearing was fine and just the seal needed replaced.

It's the poxy blummin O rings on the intermediate shaft, if I want to do the bodge then it still has to come off so might as well do the O rings and output seals on my good spare box and swap it over.

Ashcroft does a sleeved casing as the ally casing ovals when the bearings are shot and the leak then becomes a pour lol

I was mulling over whether I can be bothered to do it myself or just trade in mine as the core and cash in my spare and do the same with my LT77 gearboxes and get that done at the same time in the Ashcroft approved fitting garage there in Luton?

Have you got a cross drilled gear on the transfer box?
Otherwise the gearbox output shaft may be worn as well.

Don't know about it being cross drilled but I have pulled the PTO cover and looked the shaft splines over and they look pretty good considering the kilometres it's done.

When you removed the pto cover you can remove that gear.just remember which way round it goes otherwise you only have 3 gears

does Ashcrofts also modify the gearbox for a higher 5th gear?

Wow! ££££££

£2k or there abouts

Only on the R380 and for an additional £130, mine is the older LT77, not sure if the R380 is a direct swap onto the LT77 bell housing or not?

if the splines are doomed theres a good telltale.......
